Headline: Woodlanders Howard and Virginia Moehrke are a match with a passion for Yolo Food Bank's Kids Farmers Market program. Recently, they made the short walk from their home to Dingle Elementary School to share in the children's joy as they select fresh, nutritious foods and learn about them. The Moehrkes now challenge YOU to match the $2,500 they've invested in Kids Farmers Market, now at eight of Yolo County's highest need schools. As quickly as another $2,500 in gifts, large or small, are received as pre-scheduled Big Day of Giving donations at bit.ly/BDOGYFB2019, the faster the Moehrke's will invest another $2,500 in Kids Farmers Market! Let's see how quickly your generosity will make the match that will change lives for Yolo County children in need. Thank you, Howard and Virginia, we can't wait to see your passion matched at bit.ly/BDOGYFB2019!

Headline: Senior citizens are among our most vulnerable Yolo County residents, and too often, they have limited access to nutritious foods and meals they need to stay healthy as they age. Yolo Food Bank and Meals on Wheels Yolo County have a long-term partnership to serve this community.

Meals on Wheels provides a daily weekday meal to seniors, providing not only a freshly-made hot meal, but also socialization and a safety check from trained volunteer delivery drivers. Meals on Wheels' partnership with Yolo Food Bank allows for a discounted rate on purchasing many of the raw food materials critical to these meals, expanding the variety of local seniors' diets.

Thanks to the Yolo Food Bank and Meals on Wheels’ collaboration, we have prioritized basic needs, healthy eating, and disease prevention and management for the senior citizens who share our neighborhoods.

You can keep this partnership healthy by making pre-scheduled donations now to Big Day of Giving in support of both organizations: Yolo Food Bank at bit.ly/BDOGYFB2019 and Meals on Wheels Yolo County at bigdayofgiving.org/MOWyolo. Our Yolo County seniors can be more vibrant and less vulnerable with your commitment!

Headline: It's said you are what you eat, and CommuniCare Health Centers' "Food as Medicine" partnership with Yolo Food Bank represents a radical new approach to managing chronic diseases. Wellness Manager Edye Kuyper visits Yolo Food Bank weekly to pick up fresh produce for distribution to diabetic patients at the Salud Clinic in West Sacramento.

"We're distributing approximately 100 pounds of produce in our diabetes clinic each week, as well as a sample of a healthy snack made from the produce," Edye explains. "The program soon will expand to other CommuniCare sites in Yolo County, and to the management of other chronic diseases, as well, with Yolo Food Bank's continued support."

Headline: Winters resident James Baugh is grateful for his sons' weekly participation in Yolo Food Bank's Kids Farmers Market program at Shirley Rominger Intermediate Elementary School, where more than 70% of children qualify for free or reduced price meals:

“Our family loves Kids Farmers Market, and we can’t believe that the kids come home with seasonal, delicious food every week," James says. "It helps us to ensure our boys are getting fresh fruits and vegetables on a daily basis. It’s amazing that it’s all locally-sourced, and it has expanded what the kids eat. We had sweet potato fries last night; six months ago, I’m not sure the boys would have eaten those. My fourth grader also participated in a hummus tasting at Kids Farmers Market. He loved it, came home with a bunch of garbanzo beans and asked his mom to make more! The boys are having conversations about what they are eating and why.”

Food insecurity is about more than just not enough food to eat; it's also about having access to nutritious food to eat. Yolo Food Bank's Kids Farmers Market is making a life-long difference in children's health and wellness through fresh food access and nutrition education at eight Yolo County schools serving pre-K through 6th grades. Our NOURISH YOLO capacity expansion initiative can enable us to serve more high-need schools and children, with your support. You can nourish more children and #NourishYolo on Big Day of Giving, by pre-scheduling your donation now at bit.ly/BDOGYFB2019.

Headline: Yolo County families in crisis due to domestic abuse, child abuse or sexual assault are especially fragile, but access to good nutrition empowers them to regain a sense of wholeness. Empower Yolo's partnership with Yolo Food Bank ensures that the healthy foods needed to heal minds and bodies consistently are within reach, and Program Director Josie Enriquez sees first-hand the difference that it makes. The collaboration between the organizations services families both at the shelter and at regularly-scheduled food distributions at the Center for Families in Yolo, Knights Landing, and Davis, as well as at Marguerite Montgomery Elementary School in Davis.

"We serve people from diverse backgrounds, and they tell our staff how the food distributions help them to include more vegetables and fruits in their diets," Josie explains. "The families taking part in enrichment activities at our shelter also benefit from the food we get from Yolo Food Bank, and we appreciate that it is available to us at never more than 19 cents per pound, no matter the item."

When you choose to #NourishYolo on Big Day of Giving, you Nourish Families facing challenges that threaten their ability to thrive. Your gift will help to mend these families with good nutrition. Please pre-schedule your donation now at bit.ly/BDOGYFB2019. Local families in crisis will thank you!

Headline: When 40-year Madison resident Sherrie Lasher Barnett noticed friends and neighbors going hungry, she did something about it. Thanks to her motivation and the food she accesses from Yolo Food Bank, Madison Community Committee Food Closet has for three years now consistently nourished the Madison community (a USDA-defined "food desert") with twice-monthly distributions of fresh seasonal produce, meats, dairy and nutritious shelf-stable staples, such as rice and beans.

“I love this community…if it wasn’t for Yolo Food Bank I would have to buy this food, and money is tight,” Sherrie says.

Children, veterans, senior citizens and migrant workers in Madison all depend upon Sherrie, and Sherrie depends upon Yolo Food Bank to meet their needs at no cost/low cost. Help us help Sherrie to Nourish Madison and expand our service to her high-need community. Please NOURISH YOLO on Big Day of Giving, by pre-scheduling your donation now at bit.ly/BDOGYFB2019.

Headline: Inspired by a deep respect for all people regardless of their circumstances, Lynn Anne Phelps Holzner serves as the volunteer lunch coordinator for the homeless and under-served who visit WS Mercy Coalition of West Sacramento. More than 1,000 brown bag meals a month are provided, in addition to shelter options, by the nearly two dozen faith-based groups and city and county programs that form the coalition. Mercy Coalition's unique partnership with Yolo Food Bank formed 18 months ago, and has extended their service to the homeless to include toiletry items, in addition to bagged lunches.

"We couldn't do what we do without Yolo Food Bank," Lynn says, a bit teary-eyed. "Twice a month, I visit Yolo Food Bank for food for the lunches, snacks and also for non-food items, for a once-a-month distribution of hygiene bags. The people we serve have these basic necessities because of Yolo Food Bank."

Lynn and Mercy Coalition nourish the bodies and the spirits of West Sacramento's vulnerable, unsheltered residents, thanks to their partnership with Yolo Food Bank. You can expand our ability to Nourish West Sacramento and #NourishYolo by pre-scheduling your Big Day of Giving donation today at bit.ly/BDOGYFB2019. Headline: We were honored by the invitation last week for a Yolo Food Bank COVID-19 Response update at the Yolo County Board of Supervisors meeting. Our Director of Programs Zane Hatfield spoke with passion and confidence about our initial foresight regarding the impacts that the pandemic would have upon Yolo County residents already living in poverty, and the resulting dramatic elevation of services and programs introduced in order to meet the now 60% increase in demand for food assistance that Yolo Food Bank has experienced in the past two months. Now we are preparing for the continuing challenges of our worsening economy. Many thanks to Board Chair Gary Sandy, and Supervisors Jim Provenza and Oscar Villegas for their important questions and supportive comments, and for the participation, as well, of Don Saylor and Duane Chamberlain. We appreciate the partnership to #NourishYolo, and invite support for the Yolo Food Bank COVID-19 Relief Fund at https://yolofoodbank.org/donate-covid-19/.

Headline: "It happened through the networks that Yolo Food Bank has...to make sure that no one fell through the cracks...It's an effort we should never forget, and that merits continued support on behalf of the community, and you as elected county officials" - Former Davis City Mayor and Yolo Food Bank COVID-19 Response Coordinator Robb Davis in words prepared for the Yolo County Board of Supervisors last month.

Weekly doorstep home deliveries of produce and other grocery items continue each week in Yolo County, for 6,000 of our neighbors age 65+ and those who are health-compromised who must isolate until COVID-19 no longer threatens their lives. The easing of public health orders does not change their reality. This service will come at great expense to Yolo Food Bank this month, requiring ~$500,000 in resources with no predictable funding other than the generosity of private donors...the people and businesses of our community. May we count upon you to assist?

The Yolo Food Bank COVID-19 Relief Fund remains critical to our ability to provide and sustain emergency food response to the people of Yolo County as the dual disasters of the pandemic and economic downturn continue to impact our daily lives. Headline: An extraordinary 15 weeks of home-delivered emergency food will transition at month's end to "Neighborhood Food Access" for seniors and the health-compromised. While COVID-19 public health orders have partially re-opened Yolo County in recent weeks, Yolo Food Bank’s commitment to serving our most vulnerable, low-income residents has not changed. In order to continue to provide these residents who still must isolate with access to fresh, healthy food, they are being invited to re-confirm their needs to us so we can best serve them. As you can imagine, as much as this is a labor of love, it's also a time-intensive process that involves customized consultation in some cases, and the continued provision of nearly 100,000 pounds of additional food into the community each week. Your gift to the Yolo Food Bank COVID-19 Relief Fund at https://yolofoodbank.org/donate-covid-19/ supports this ongoing heavy lift for our staff and our dedicated volunteers. May we count upon you to continue to save lives in Yolo County this Summer as COVID-19 still threatens these 6,000 precious residents?
