Headline: Are you a US digital nomad or expat entrepreneur selling products and services online?

Maybe you’ve been thinking about starting a business but not sure if you should set up as an LLC, S Corp, 1099 contractor... offshore corporation, maybe??

Hi, my name is Stewart Patton. I’m a US tax attorney who helps US digital nomads and expat entrepreneurs understand and optimize their tax situation by working through the right legal structure.

When I search online today on how to set up a business as a digital nomad or expat I see *3 problems* that are widespread:

#1 - Listening to offshore tax “gurus”:

So many guys (sorry men, it is mostly us) are giving their tax “opinion” but clearly don’t understand US tax law and exactly how it works for nomads and expats. There’s so much bad advice online, and it’s hard to filter the good from the bad if you don’t know tax.

YOU are responsible for your US taxes, so take advice from people who are specialists in US tax law, not these so-called offshore gurus.

#2 - Setting up unnecessarily complex legal structures:

I’ve seen it all: From freelancers, coaches and designers with BVI and Estonian companies to Amazon FBA businesses locked into expensive and over-regulated Hong Kong corporations.

It’s a mess.

If you want to minimise your US tax it DOES NOT need to be complex at all. You should have the simplest structure for your type of business that complies with US tax law.

(Caution: Many of the so-called “gurus” are in the business of selling offshore structures so it’s in their interest to sell you what they have, not what is best for you. Like asking a barber if you need a haircut.)

#3 - Waiting until they're profitable before forming a legal entity:

I understand that proof of concept or MVP is smart, but the problem arises when it goes well.
