Headline: Alaska-native, Stranje, reflects on giving birth to her twin daughters Amira and Amani.

“I gave birth at 32 weeks via C-section. At first everything was going well; Amira seemed perfectly normal—but then I saw Amani, and my heart sank. Before I knew it, she was rushed out of the operating room and immediately taken to Seattle Children’s. I didn’t get to see Amani until almost two weeks later because I had to stay in the hospital. As soon as I saw her and held her in my arms, I burst into tears.”

Amira and Amani were reunited and recently celebrated their first birthday. “I’ve been super emotional thinking about how far we’ve come. I’m so happy to see that Amani gets to celebrate her birthday with her best friend and sister, Amira. The name Amani means ‘faith,’ and even though there will be rough days ahead, I have faith that she will get to live the normal and happy life she deserves."

Headline: Ruth was born with a rare gastrointestinal disorder, making it difficult for food to move through her digestive tract. During her five-month hospital stay, her parents learned they would need to feed her through a feeding tube—an especially daunting task as Ruth’s mother is blind and her father is partially sighted.

Determined to bring Ruth home, they painstakingly practiced for months, ultimately passing the training with flying colors and proving that it was possible to safely care for her.

Ruth’s mother hopes to teach her daughter that just because she’s different, she can still live a normal life. “I’ve learned not to let my blindness limit me in what I can do. I want Ruth to know she can do the same.”
