Here’s how LinkedIn almost destroyed my business. I was trying to land clients using automated messaging… It wasn’t working and I didn’t know what to do, because I knew my ideal clients were on the platform. //////So I thought who better to ask why it isn’t working, than the people I had already sent automated messages to. So I decided to reach out ‘manually' and ask them why they didn’t respond. What is surprising is that nobody responded when I sent them an automated message. But when I sent this 'real' message asking them why they didn’t respond, nearly everyone replied. More on that in a moment. Here is the gist of what they told me. ''I get so many of these messages, I’m not interested’' ''I’m not looking / thinking about what you are selling right now'' '' I just can’t take you seriously when you send automated messages'' But then something surprising happened, the conversations I had started manually continued into greater depth. We started having a normal human conversation and within 30 mins they were actually inquiring about what I do. And I ended up booking calls. Now, why does this impact us right now As someone who sold to other business owners through a period of uncertainty in 2008, I can tell you beyond a shadow of doubt that having a personal relationship and building trust became the most important factor for me in consistently booking qualified calls that became clients. A while ago on LinkedIn, people would be drawn in by these tempting ‘pitches' made via automated messages, but we have seen their effectiveness plummet. Because people are now looking for a relationship before they want to talk business. That's right, no matter how good the copy in an automated message, it's getting harder to get traction. I have clients that just this last week successfully personalised their LinkedIn Strategy, to book sales calls. 2 things you need to be successful on LinkedIn right now, even with the uncertainly. 1. Relationship before business. A while ago it was acceptable to send the same message to everyone and just change the ’name’ of the recipient. Now people are less trusting and less likely to ‘bite’ to random messages, no matter how good the copy. Instead they are looking for the ‘know, like and trust’ factor and this means the importance of the relationship just went up. In fact, let me ask a question…. I bet you get bombarded with messages all day on LinkedIn…..and ignore them all! Manual messaging and personalising every message is the way forward. And this approach takes our clients less time than they used to spend on volume automated messaging. 2. Focus Endless content (blogs and videos) designed to get mass engagement is not the way to go right now. Only certain industries are looking to move forwards with getting help. The process needs to be super focused on ‘who’ is approached and with a message ‘specific' to the individual. The savvy coaches and consultants have already adapted, they quickly made changes to their process for booking meetings with ideal prospects. A consistent, repeatable process based around inbound leads and personalized connections (not low status activities like mass messaging), so they can pick and choose who they work with while spending less than 60 minutes per day on the platform. Using multi-stage selling like this, my clients fill their calendar with calls with qualified decision makers, sometimes 4 in one day.
