Headline: WE NEED TO MAKE SURE THE STERIGENICS SHUTDOWN IS PERMANENT!

I am relieved to read the Illinois EPA's Seal Order shutting down most of Sterigenics- but it can be lifted. As Mayor of Burr Ridge, I will continue to fight to keep Sterigenics shut down permanently and its operations moved far away from Burr Ridge and our neighbors. Legislation will need to be created to continue to protect our communities. My background as an attorney, former DuPage County Board member and past Burr Ridge Mayor for seven years will count more than ever. Burr Ridge needs a leader that will stay vigilant; not a follower who is late to the game for selfish political reasons or believes that women’s increased breast cancer risk is due to a single drink of alcohol.

Headline: My challenger claims he will focus on property taxes as Mayor. Unfortunately, a Mayor or Board of a non-home rule village like Burr Ridge has little power to affect property taxes because a village does not run on property taxes - and thus cannot meaningfully raise or lower them. But, he ignores that fact to play to your emotion.

What I will do is continue to focus on conservative use of Village revenue. Those revenue dollars come from sales, state gasoline, and use taxes such as hotel stays that the village shares with the state and counties. The past Boards and Mayors have always been conservative with our revenue dollars. Our conservative use of those monies is why Burr Ridge has a Triple-A bond rating - the highest possible rating of a municipality- in a state with an almost junk bond rating.

Please look at your property tax bill. It is evident from it that Burr Ridge receives only about 2-3% annually of your property taxes. If Burr Ridge closed, provided no police or other services such as quality roads, your tax bill would decline minimally at best and likely rise because we would need police and customary services - and pay pensions- nonetheless and would specially taxed by the counties or state to pay them.

My challenger knows this reality as a Trustee yet he thinks he can fool you with his rhetoric about property taxes. Notice he has not said HOW he would lower your taxes. He knows he cannot meaningfully do so, without eliminating essential services - but it sounds good when you are trolling for votes and have no accomplishments to stand on.

I pledge to keep the standards of our essential services, and find the revenue stream from a fully leased Village Center and development of the TCF property with tenants and projects that bring sales, hotel and related revenue that the village can use to sustain Burr Ridge as “a very special place.” That’s what the prior Boards and Mayors have done very well for you.

Headline: As a mayoral candidate, my position on the D86 referendum for the Hinsdale South and Central residents is this: educate yourselves about the referendum with quality, unbiased information so that you can make an informed decision. Then vote your conscious on what is best overall for our community. I recognized that there are legitimate concerns in Burr Ridge about the use of school tax money by the school boards. Those concerns will not be solved by this referendum and should be addressed by our affected residents regardless of the referendum’s outcome. What is more important than ensuring our children are prepared for success through challenging curricula options and top-rated athletic facilities and opportunities?

I firmly believe that school referendum issues should not enter the Village Board room and mayoral race. A trustee or Mayor should not use her/his position to advocate for one side or the other – it is not within the village board’s jurisdiction and is exactly why we have school boards. This is particularly true because there are many Cook County Burr Ridge residents who send students to Lyons Township High School and who are not affected by the D86 referendum.

Strong schools mean strong communities with strong property values. They also mean property taxes MUST be wisely spent – not only on facilities, but teacher and administrator compensation and benefits. Burr Ridge has the good fortune to have three top-rated high schools within its borders. As a high schooler who played three sports, including football, basketball and baseball, I know how crucial high school sports are to building values in our student athletes that will sustain each of them for their lives.

An honest debate on the amount of money needed for these programs is our right and responsibility – what is wrong is to use the referendum to divide and insult large populations, including some of our residents, with vitriol that labels them as structural racist and elitists. Headline: I “Increased Spending?” Mottled!

As my challenger should know and tell you but does not, only the Village Board passes ordinances for expenditures. The Mayor cannot and has no power to do so – and I did not. While I was Mayor, we hired two more patrolmen that the Chief was allotted---the Board and he determined the patrolmen were needed to reach our full complement of officers to protect the village. The Board and I, of course, favored hiring these officers.

Since my challenger has no record of achievement, he “mottles” the facts. He spins the hiring of those police officers to protect us into ME “increasing spending.” He also does not tell you that he has questioned fully staffing our police department.

He has criticized providing our police force with state-of-the-art tools to fight crime and keep our residences and businesses safe. Though he couches his words, he indicates that he would rather hire temps and other staff who are not vested in the safety and well-being of our community. I will make sure we are protected with the best – as I did before.
