Headline: “They have a measly amount of wilderness (in the plan),” said Tiana Luke, a Conservation Northwest staffer based in northeast Washington.

The lack of proposed wilderness could also impact recreation, and by extension, the area economy, said Bobby Whittaker, a recreation proponent and organizer who lives in Republic.

“Right now I’m disappointed with the lack of wilderness,” he said. “It’s so critical on top of all of the forestry success. We need a large area of well defined wilderness that is accessible. Just as much as we need areas for mountain bikes and motorized recreation.” #ColumbiaHighlands #ColvilleWild

Headline: Should hikers and other outdoor recreationists pay a small tax on gear purchases to support public lands and wildlife?

Since 1937, hunters and anglers have paid 11 percent taxes on their equipment to support wildlife conservation, public lands and outdoor education. But hunting participation has declined while outdoor recreation has skyrocketed. This is impacting wildlife in new ways while agencies are short on funds to conserve and restore our natural heritage.

Earlier this year, Washington state lawmakers proposed a .2 percent tax on outdoor gear sales over $200, equating to $1 on a $500 purchase, to benefit wildlife and state public lands. Despite lively discussion, the bill did not make it out of committee.

Would you support this kind of modest tax on outdoor gear to help fund conservation?
