Headline: "When I would go to theatre school, the people I would look forward to seeing were the janitors, who were a Guatemalan refugee family… It was then that I decided I would start writing the stories of the Latinx community in Canada. Because I was not seeing those stories on Canadian stages."

Playwright, actor and author Carmen Aguirre has been attending Banff Centre's Playwrights Lab since 2002 and has developed five plays over multiple residencies. Over the years, she has also worked closely with program director Brian Quirt on a number of projects, including her 2019 one-woman play Broken Tailbone, earning rave reviews in The Globe and Mail and The Toronto Star.

Discover why Carmen uses the medium of playwriting to challenge what a refugee is, and why she returns to Banff Centre time and again to work on her craft →http://bit.ly/3boKF6e

Lucienne Robillard, a member of the House of Commons who had just been appointed Minister of Citizenship and Immigration weeks before, was present and welcomed Canada's newest countrymen and women.

Headline: Erynne Gilpin, founder of Indigenous Womxn Climb, joined us for the Climbing Through Barriers panel during 2019's Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival.

For Gilpin, who is Saulteaux-Cree Métis, discovering and excelling at rock climbing is an act of decolonization. Despite origin stories that reference legendary climbs, it wasn’t easy for her to find a sense of belonging in the sport.

Hear Gilpin in her own words talking about climbing with other women and reclaiming a place in rock climbing for Indigenous people.

Headline: “The fact that there’s so much fakery going on is a real challenge. It’s even a challenge for journalists.”

In the age of alt-facts, it’s become increasingly difficult to know which sources to trust when it comes to the news. Even for seasoned journalists.

Robert Cribb (The Toronto Star), Jessica Johnson (The Walrus), Ron Nixon (The New York Times) and Scott Stossel (The Atlantic) joined us in October 2017 for The Democracy Project: Journalism in the Age of Alt-Facts.

Watch as they break down some of these issues.
