Headline: Tonight the Town Council passed a proposal I made (with slight modifications) to increase the property tax rebates offered to senior citizens through our STAY (Senior Tax Assistance Yarmouth) program. Next year qualifying senior citizens will be able to receive a rebate of up to $1200 instead of the current $900 maximum rebate amount. I would have loved to have been able to make this increase applicable this year but we would have had to budget for it last year. There's still time to apply for a rebate this year!

Headline: Thank you, Dr. Becca Newlin Hutchinson for your support for my re-election to the Yarmouth Town Council. I can and do work collaboratively with others regardless of political ideology for the betterment of our town. Not so long ago I remember hearing about an effective senator from New York who worked well with senators across the aisle even though she was endlessly vilified as partisan and divisive. In spite of the fact that she was so hated, Hillary Clinton accomplished a lot in the Senate because she focused on common ground and areas of agreement. I've learned a lot watching her over the years. She is truly a role model for women in public service.

Headline: I am excited to announce that I will be running for re-election to the Yarmouth Town Council. It has been an honor to serve my town and I would be grateful for the opportunity to continue to serve Yarmouth for another term.

I remain committed to the priorities I’ve pursued during my first term: supporting Yarmouth’s schools, expanding targeted property tax relief for Yarmouth's senior citizens, keeping property tax rates reasonable, promoting a vibrant local economy through strategic economic development, increasing the representation of women in town government, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by transitioning to clean, renewable energy.

If you would like to support my campaign by placing a lawnsign in your yard, making a campaign contribution, or adding your name to a growing list of supporters, leave a comment below and I'll contact you or contact me at aprilhumphrey@gmail.com.

Finally, please stay tuned for ways you may be able to help. I may ask for volunteers to help call Yarmouth residents with information about how to vote and to encourage mail in voting. If this is the kind of thing you’d be up for, please feel free to let me know.

Headline: Today I was asked what one thing I'd focus on if re-elected to the Town Council. Yarmouth's biggest challenge is how we keep our town a vibrant community with great schools and robust public services while also keeping it affordable for the people who live here. My number one goal on the Council will continue to be to support our excellent schools and public services while looking for ways to reduce the property tax burden on residents. There are four things the Council can do to help: invest in economic development, invest in renewable energy and energy efficiency projects, advocate for full state funding for school and local services, and expand tax relief to low-income senior citizens on fixed incomes. More to come on my ideas in all four of these areas in the coming days.

Headline: Supporting Yarmouth's small businesses: The Town Council has passed a micro-loan program for Yarmouth businesses affected by the Covid 19 shut down. This will provide funds to local businesses that need to adapt operations, or that have remained open and have had to significantly change operations. Loans for up to $5000 are either 25% or 75% forgivable depending on your business type. Specifically any non-essential businesses that meet certain criteria can qualify for the 75% forgiveness. In addition, restaurants can qualify as well.

I successfully advocated for childcare businesses to also be eligible for the 75% loan forgiveness. This means potentially some small but much needed help for childcare programs like Songbird Creative Centers. I have spoken with child care operators from all over the state in my role as a Board Member for Maine Association for the Education of Young Children and I know some programs have already closed their doors for good, making it even harder for parents to get back to work. As a former child care operator myself, I understand that these types of businesses operate on a shoestring and little or no profit. And we all know how critical childcare is to getting our economy back up and running!

Headline: Thank you, Leigh Kirchner for your support for my re-election to the Yarmouth Town Council. Ensuring that we can keep Yarmouth's older residents in their homes (if that's what they want) is a top priority for me. It's also why I proposed and successfully advocated for an increase to Yarmouth's property tax rebate program for seniors with lower/fixed incomes. It's also why I supported funding for a senior advocate from Southern Maine Agency on Aging to help seniors who need help.

Headline: Yarmouth friends & neighbors,
It has been an honor to represent you on the Town Council for the past 3 years. On Tuesday, you have the chance to give me 3 more years on our Town Council, and I would be so grateful for your vote and the opportunity to serve again.

During my time on the Council I have prioritized: investing in the future of our town, making our town more welcoming and inclusive, and protecting our town’s most vulnerable residents.

Investing in our future means funding our schools, building infrastructure needed for business and commercial growth, and promoting a shift to sustainable, renewable energy. On the Council I have voted to support fully funded school budgets and have opposed school budget cuts. I have advocated for protecting Yarmouth’s business development investment fund for use on high priority business related infrastructure projects that will benefit the whole town. I got Yarmouth’s Committee for Energy Efficiency and Sustainability established and shepherded the committee’s first significant project -- a municipal solar array that will provide 85% of the electricity usage for town and school operations -- through the Council.

I am committed to making our town more welcoming, safe and inclusive for our increasingly diverse population. I drafted and advocated for passage of an anti-racism resolution in my first year. I have worked to recruit and appoint under represented groups to the Town’s various volunteer policy committees. I am committed to more substantive actions to address systemic racial and gender bias in our town’s practices and policies.

I have and will continue to work to protect our town’s most vulnerable people, including seniors and those who are experiencing housing or food insecurity. I successfully advocated for a 33% increase in Yarmouth’s popular property tax rebate program for seniors 67+. This program makes it affordable for seniors to stay in their homes as they age. I also have worked to protect ten

Headline: Yesterday I laid out my priorities for a second term on the Town Council: investing in the future of our town, making our town more welcoming and inclusive, and protecting our town’s most vulnerable residents. I am writing today because I cannot accomplish those goals myself. I urge you to also vote for Tim Shannon and Michelle Cromarty with your other two votes. They will both work with me to accomplish these priorities.

Timothy Shannon has and will always be a strong advocate for fully funding our schools. On the Council he has been a strong advocate for keeping our town livable and walkable, and protecting our treasured town village. He has also been a strong advocate for improved recycling and operations at our Transfer Station. He supported and helped co-author the anti-racism resolution we passed during our first year on the Council and he supported every solar initiative I introduced.

Michelle Cromarty is running this year for the first time. Like me, she has a strong desire to see more equitable representation of women in government. If she is elected, we would have three women on our Town Council, close to 50%! She is a strong supporter of libraries, will support our schools and public services, and will advocate for plans to make our town more bikeable and walkable. She will support solar and renewable energy proposals to address climate change at the local level.

I hope you will join me in voting for these two outstanding candidates for Yarmouth Town Council.
