If selling products using Facebook Ads is difficult, why not leverage free traffic from the marketplaces instead? In the eCom space, we’ve done the same thing – that is, send Facebook or Google traffic to our product’s landing page. If the traffic doesn’t convert to sales, we’ll find another product to promote. If we find a winning product, we’ll scale it to the moon and make more sales. When sales slow – which is what happens when too many people see the ads and stop purchasing the product – we have to find the next winning product. I’ve been using this business model for years. But is it sustainable? We all know that the rules for Facebook Ads change every month, and they’re getting more difficult to use. Some of you already know that the cost of running Facebook Ads is much higher than what it was 2 or 3 years ago. It’s not because Mark Zuckerberg wants more money from you. It’s because more people want to use Facebook Ads to promote their products. When more people want to show their ads to the same audience, the overall cost will increase naturally. The bad news is that it will never decrease. It will become more difficult, year after year. (Don’t get me wrong. Paid traffic still works, and it remains the traffic source I like the most. You just have to adapt and learn how to deal with it.) Anyway, three years ago, I knew about selling print-on-demand products on marketplaces such as Amazon or Etsy. If you’re unfamiliar with the print-on-demand business, just think about t-shirts or coffee mugs. In POD, we create designs to put on these kinds of products, and sell them. But we don’t have to make products ourselves. Many suppliers in the US make and ship the products for you. You just have to do the design and marketing work. I’ve found that it’s possible to sell these kinds of products on marketplaces such as Amazon or Etsy.
