...When I first picked up a guitar, I struggled with fretting and changing between chords for more than a year.
I didn’t want to play like Hendrix or perform on stage, I just wanted to be able to sit down by myself, strum away and know that it sounded good.
I started off learning standard beginner chords like C, D, E, Em, A, Am & G
But, I just couldn’t change between them fast enough to play a song...
...my fingers felt too big, too slow and I found it difficult to get them into the correct positions on the fret board.
Then over a year into failing to play guitar, I realised something that changed my life:
Chord changes are hard to do quickly and smoothly because you have to coordinate moving multiple fingers into different places on the fretboard all at the same time.
It was this realisation that led me to get to grips with the guitar... and eventually into teaching others.
When I started teaching guitar, I knew I wanted to solve this chord playing problem for beginners once and for all, especially for those with fingers that feel stiff and uncooperative.
Fast forward to today as a guitar teacher I never teach beginners to start with the standard open chords because I know that the older they are the more it will slow them down.
Instead, I created a chord sheet to show beginners 6 much better chords to learn first. They’re some of the easiest real chords to play and they form the basis of over 1,000 popular songs from the 50s, 60s and 70s onward.
I call them the 'Django Chords’ and the great thing about these chords is you can change between all 6 of them by only moving two fingers. So you can easily switch between them quickly and smoothly to get playing songs much sooner, even if you’ve been frustrated with beginner chords for a while.
Dave Moore (that’s him in the picture) is a 61 year old guitar player from Bradford, who started playing last year using the Django Chords and when I asked him what he thought of them, he said:
""Start the easy way with Ian O’Brien’s Django chords. They’re super simple, a great place to start & they’ll have you knocking out recognisable tunes in no time. It worked for me.""
These chords have made such an impact on people like Dave’s guitar playing that I've decided to make the chord sheet available for free to everyone, but only for a short time.
So if you’ve ever had trouble playing and changing guitar chords, this is for you.
