We all know someone younger than us, with better gear than us, and access to more resources - I call this ‘the cool kid’. When we see the cool kid and their new lenses, a steadicam, or the latest drone, the feeling is always the same. A feeling of pressure, worry and comparison. We panic and think we must get new equipment, or learn the latest fancy video transitions, otherwise our skills and services become redundant. Especially now that the cool kid can produce videos for half the price, and at twice the speed as us. So why do we even bother? This is how I used to think, until I realised I was fighting a battle that I couldn't win. So in order to survive I had to shift my thinking. The bad news is that the cool kid is here to stay - but the good news is, we don’t need to compete with the cool kid. Because we aren’t even playing in the same league. Instead of focusing on how good our video looks, we focus on the impact our videos drive. We switch our thinking from ‘what do they get?’ to ‘what do they need?’ And once we figure this out, we use simple, engaging storytelling through video that solves their specific problem. And we measure the results through metrics, data and ROI. And you can bet that the cool kid isn’t doing this. They’re too busy thinking about themselves. They're more focused on editing together travel montages with music that will be out of date in 6 months. If you can shoot a video on a potato and still create a high ROI then your clients will be happy - and your higher prices are justified. And if a business owner is impressed by someone's fancy gadgets, that’s a red flag - as they’re most likely chasing ego fuelled, meaningless vanity metrics. Re-adjusting my approach and implementing this strategy myself has enabled me to stay top of the game for a long time - no matter how ‘cool’ the cool kids become. Ashmina - Nepal / UK - Dir. Dekel Berenson
Crazy News - Ashmina is Oscar Qualified Twice! For Your Consideration! Our film is now Oscar Qualified twice for winning Best Short Film in both Jerusalem and Krakow!! Help us spread the word! We are so humbled and happy that our little film is watched and considered by so many people. It's been such a crazy journey for our cast, crew, and the entire team! ASHMINA - Nestled between a beautiful lake and the Himalayas, Ashmina, 13, lives with her family at the outskirts of Pokhara Nepal, paragliding capital of the world. The remote and traditional town is also a busy tourist destination where the locals are profoundly affected by the swarms of tourists who visit it daily. Forced to skip school, Ashmina helps her family make ends meet by working at the landing field, packing the parachutes of foreign pilots in return of small change. Director's Statement - Ashmina’s story was inspired by a 2014 trip to Nepal. Following a mountain climbing expedition in the Everest region, I travelled to Pokhara to complete my training as a paragliding pilot. I was immediately captivated by the young children who were working in the landing field and instantly knew that I would one day return to Nepal to capture their story on film. From the very beginning, I envisioned Ashmina as a social realist film. It was shot in open locations, using mostly available light and a local semi-professional crew. The cast is made-up of locals, non-professional actors who we met in the location in which the story takes place. The foreigners portraying David and his friends are backpackers who we met in the streets of Pokhara who had to take time off from their travels so they could participate in the film. Ashmina attempts to authentically capture the world of the protagonist, a young Nepali girl living in a traditional society, a culture which is threatened and challenged by the flood of tourists who visit it daily. The people, places, and atmosphere we’ve captured in the film are real, and the crew was minimal which allowed us to work inconspicuously and capture the essence of the world around us. The experience and success of the project have inspired our team to turn Ashmina into a full-length feature film. The film will explore episodes in the lives of five women of different ages, from different countries and backgrounds, all facing issues that concern women around the world today. Cast: Dikshya Karki - Ashmina (Nepal) Fabian Gleeson - David (Australia) Prakat Pageni - Ashmina's Father (Nepal) Sadhana Bhandari - Ashmina's Mother (Nepal) Production and Crew Executive Producers - Paul Wesley, Andrew Carlberg, Elad Keidan First Assistant Director - Dominic Davey Local Assistant Director - Prashish Bajracharya Runner Assistant Director - Laxman Khadka Pilot Assistant Director - Buddhi Parajuli, Subash Thapa Jonny Runners - Suman Nagarkoti, Samrik Khatri Arjun Neupane Production Coordinator - Shyam Khadka First A.
