We are also proud parents of three beautiful children. Ten years ago we started an English School in Vietnam. Is there really a formula for writing a story that sells? After over 10 years as a development executive in Hollywood, I can confidently say… “YES!” (sort of) Here’s what I mean: My job in Hollywood was to read 500+ pages per week from screenwriters wanting to get their scripts turned into movies. Most of those scripts got a big “NO THANKS.” Bad writing. Bad ideas. Bad execution. A small percentage would get a second reading… then a more gentle “No, thank you.” Decent idea. Fair writing. Not good enough on the execution for studios to want to invest. An even smaller percentage would grab you from the first page and keep you turning pages so fast you’d rush an email to the boss with a “HEY! I HAVE ONE WE NEED TO DEVELOP!” We celebrated getting those scripts because we were in the business of making movies. We WANTED good scripts. We WANTED to discover good writers. It was our job to find good stories. Like all jobs, after a while, you find patterns in what works and what doesn’t. When I was reading 500+ pages per week trying to find a winning script, I wasn’t just “going with my gut.” I was looking for patterns and recognizable elements from stories that sold well in the past. It was my job. It’s how movies get made. It’s how stories get sold. And here’s what I mean when I say that there is “sort of” a formula for creating an amazing story people want: There ARE certain elements that ALL good stories contain. There ARE certain writing strategies that can take bland ideas and make them exciting, entertaining, and SELLABLE. There ARE patterns to stories that sell.
