The wonders of Turmeric (and what most people really need to know about it)... The importance / wonders of turmeric are being reported more and more in the press of late. There have been several programmes on TV promoting the health benefits, and numerous newspaper articles of a similar nature, not to mention a huge number of celebrities using it. We obviously think this is great, not just because we sell a turmeric product but it’s increasing the public awareness of the powers of natural foods. However, it also means we get a LOT of questions about what its for, and when you should and shouldn’t be using it. So this article aims to help to answer many of those… --- Q. Can I take when on medication? Many of our customers do without issue. That all said, we have to cover ourselves and put a disclaimer to say check with your doctor if you aren’t sure as we aren’t allowed to advise on medication. There are some meds where it seems a doctor will often likely advise you not to take turmeric… This includes Warfarin, or when someone has gallstones, in particular (though with gallstones the problems generally appear to be more specific to curcumin supplements rather than turmeric supplements, but we have to advise you follow your doctor’s advice). Q. Is Using Turmeric the same as using Curcumin? Curcumin is one of the main benefits of using a turmeric supplement. However, its only one compound, whereas turmeric contains many beneficial compounds that work together. To isolate just the curcumin from the turmeric is extracting one beneficial compound and leaving behind the rest and is completely unnecessary, providing you get a sufficient dose and quality of turmeric. It’s like knowing that you need lots of nutrients in your diet and only using vitamin C whilst ignoring the rest! Therefore, I have always advised that someone uses turmeric as opposed to the single compound curcumin if they want maximum health benefits. Q. Is just adding turmeric powder to my meals as effective as using the Advanced Turmeric capsules? There are a few differences in using the capsules to just normal turmeric… Firstly, our capsules do use turmeric obviously but the turmeric is an extremely pure form which means it is free from some of the toxins and pesticides that can be found in non-organic turmeric. It’s also mixed with “Bioperine” - a natural black pepper extract which studies have shown improves the absorption and effectiveness by 20 times / 2000% (on its own turmeric isn’t well absorbed into the body). Taking normal turmeric with food does have some benefit but it wouldn’t be anywhere near as high as our turmeric with the Bioperine. Also, there's the fact that taking in capsule form is much more convenient. Most people don’t want to add turmeric to a couple of meals every day (in reality it’s just not going to happen), so the capsules make it very easy to meet the daily requirement for maximum benefit. Q. How many Advanced Turmeric capsules should you take? We suggest most adults build up to 4 per day, especially if they need them, but start at 1 for a few days, then 2, and so on, only increasing up to 4 assuming you are doing ok with them. Q. How should it be taken? We advise that the capsules, if possible (though not essential) should be taken with food (for improved absorption and effectiveness), and if possible spread the dose across the day (so 2 in the morning, 2 in the afternoon / evening). Q. Is Advanced Turmeric the same as the Turmeric supplements found in high street stores? The turmeric supplements they sell in most well-known high street stores are normally significantly different to Advanced Turmeric, in terms of quality, effectiveness and value for money. Firstly, ours contains 500mg per capsule whereas normally, most others are 400mg. Sometimes brands will deliberately mislabel their product, and make crazy claims, saying it’s the equivalent of 10,000mg per capsule, but that's just not possible as the capsule would be huge. FANTASTIC advice, all backed by science. If you're short on time, here's a brief summary: 1. Move. Our bodies need to move. They need to stretch, reach, twist, bend, step, sweat, to whatever degree works for our unique shapes and constitutions. It’s not just about “staying in shape.” It’s about your immune health and your mental health, as well! Build movement in your structure, at least 20 minutes per day! YouTube exercise videos range from three-minute workouts to more than an hour, and many of them are family-friendly, too. 2. Nourish. You might have a sense of what foods make you feel lively, focused, resourced, and sane, right? We suggest not banning or outlawing the small treats that bring you joy, but rather setting up a daily structure that (mostly) fills you with nourishing, healthy foods. Always wanted to make a dietary change, learn to meal prep, teach your kids to cook, or sample a new cuisine? Now’s the time! Structure one or two 30-minute chunks of cooking into your days. 3. Connect. This one, more than ever, is key. Humans need to feel connected. We need to feel seen, heard, and understood by another human—and to extend the same in return. And since it won’t “just happen” throughout your day, you’re going to need to schedule it. More to the point, you’ll need to ask for it. To get vulnerable enough to say, “I really want to connect with you. Can we talk?” Tell the truth about how you’re feeling, what you’re experiencing. Invite them to do the same. Listen with kindness. Offer your support with generosity. High-quality human attention may feel like a scarce resource right now, but you can generate an infinite supply of it. 4. Be. Amid all the “doing”—the preparing, protecting, adjusting, coping, responding, providing, procuring—humans need moments to simply BE. It’s not necessarily about serenity, or warm fuzzy feelings. It’s about pausing long enough to let your nervous system come back to baseline after prolonged activation. Experiment with what works for you. My relationship with food was terrible. I’d work long hours, hit a tough workout, and then take a trip to the pantry that would end in a delicious pile of empty pop-tart boxes... Due to my out-of-control hunger and poor planning, my food choices were all over the place. Some days I’d have ice cream for lunch, pizza for dinner and maybe some protein powder in between. Of course, every once in awhile I’d have a salad, some days I’d commit to "eating clean," and some weeks I’d even try "strict Paleo." No matter what plan I tried, it would all come crashing down into a pile of empty ice cream cartons. My performance suffered. Some days I crushed my WODs, but other days I’d be cramping after the warm-up. Some weeks you’d see my abs…Other weeks my wife Shelby would give me the "you’re getting a dad bod.." look. I had no structure. No plan. No consistency. Fast forward a few months…and now, I know exactly what I need to eat and when to eat it, and how much to have (best part is I still get to eat my favorite food--ice cream). But now, I do it with a smart plan in place. I’ve actually built my favorite foods into my diet. Because of this they no longer tempt me when I am feeling weak. Once the foundation is set, adding in fatty cuts of meat (like bacon) and super carb-heavy dishes (like ice cream) makes things more exciting and do-able. After all….there’s no way I’m sticking to any eating plan that doesn’t involve ice cream! But how do I know how much protein to eat? Well, there's no "one size fits all" answer because this changes depending on body type, training plans, and goals, but a good rule of thumb is to eat one gram per pound of bodyweight. But that’s just a starting point. To really see results…learn principles of nutrition one must (Yoda voice). Protein intake needs to be updated as goals change, training plans intensify, and bodies adjust...the best part is that once an athlete understands how to update on the go, they don't forget.

I had no structure. No plan. No consistency. Fast forward a few months…and now, I know exactly what I need to eat and when to eat it, and how much to have (best part is I still get to eat my favorite food--ice cream). But now, I do it with a smart plan in place. I’ve actually built my favorite foods into my diet. Because of this they no longer tempt me when I am feeling weak. As long as I ‘check my boxes’ and have room left over, I’m OK to take a dip into the cookie jar. It’s pretty cool... The biggest breakthrough was learning how to work more lean protein into my diet. There are actually tons of tasty, convenient ways. Here are a couple good ones... - Making a BOS (big ol' salad) with tons of chicken and having that for lunch a few days in a row. - Quickly mixing up a double scoop of protein powder into Greek yogurt or oatmeal. - Baking tons of tofu with spices to eat through the week. Once the foundation is set, adding in fatty cuts of meat (like bacon) and super carb-heavy dishes (like ice cream) makes things more exciting and do-able. After all….there’s no way I’m sticking to any eating plan that doesn’t involve ice cream! But how do I know how much protein to eat? Well, there's no "one size fits all" answer because this changes depending on body type, training plans, and goals, but a good rule of thumb is to eat one gram per pound of bodyweight. But that’s just a starting point. To really see results…learn principles of nutrition one must (Yoda voice). Protein intake needs to be updated as goals change, training plans intensify, and bodies adjust...the best part is that once an athlete understands how to update on the go, they don't forget.

Enjoying Christmas just before and after your weight loss surgery – mission possible! And our lovely dietitian Deborah is sharing the answer on how to do it. “The good news is that you can still enjoy Christmas whatever stage you are at. If Christmas falls in the 2 weeks before your surgery: Admittedly this is difficult but keep within your daily 800 calorie allowance by eating very small portions of your Christmas dinner. Be strong and avoid all the naughty chocolates, pastries and savouries- it will be worth it as you will be at your best for your surgery. Pre surgery Christmas Dinner: 4oz of turkey breast (or Quorn fillet), half a plate of carrots, Brussel sprouts, peas, parsnips (roasted with a spray of 1% fat olive oil spray) and 2 roast potatoes (roasted with a spray of 1% fat olive oil spray) and gravy. Dessert- fresh fruit e.g. strawberries with a dollop of 0% fat Greek yoghurt. Post surgery Week 1 - Then it is clear Turkey consommé for you. Weeks 2 -3 - Homemade Turkey soup (remember – no lumps) Weeks 4 - 5 - Plate up a small portion of your Christmas dinner and mash thoroughly with a fork. Week 6 onwards – A very small helping of your Turkey roast – remember to eat your turkey first and it’s wiser to have the brown meat (as it is softer). Chew chew chew. Eat slowly. Dessert? After weight loss surgery, you will feel fuller on a smaller portion of food. Avoid the Christmas pudding as this is likely to cause dumping. Have a small portion of fruit or yoghurt if you are not too full. Avoid snacking on high fat and high sugar foods at all times as you will suffer from dumping. Stay away from the cream and chocolates, otherwise you will miss that afternoon Christmas film! Alcohol? It is not recommended to drink any alcohol for the first 6 months. However, a half glass of white wine topped up with flat soda as a treat on Christmas day is ok if you are at least 8 weeks after surgery.
