EMSA - European Medical Students' Association “Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world”, begins the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).
On the 10th of December 1948, the UDHR was adopted by the UN General Assembly and since then, it is considered to be a milestone in the history of mankind, as it is the first document that set a common standard of achievement for all nations; it proposed Human Rights as inalienable, indivisible and universal.
But what are Human Rights? Human rights are ethical principles that set specific standards of human behavior, but are also protected as legitimate rights as part of international law, contained in treaties and declarations that spell out specific rights that countries are required to uphold.
And why Human Rights? Because every person qualifies for these rights simply because they are human beings. They don’t make distinction of any kind, such as race, color, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth, or other status. Human rights reflect the minimum standards necessary for people to live with dignity. They give people the freedom of choice and expression, among other things, guarantee people the means necessary for their basic needs (food, housing, education) and by guaranteeing life, liberty, equality and security, human rights protect people against abuse by those more powerful.
