Let’s imagine for a moment that the time has come for humanity to leave Earth and establish a home elsewhere. In this hypothetical situation we not only have the technology to colonize one planet but multiple planets across the galaxy. But how would this actually work? What’s the difference between a freelancer who succeeds and one who fails? Most freelancers operate under the assumption that they need to always have a constant stream of one-off jobs in order to make a sustainable living. This leads them to rely heavily on services like platforms like Fiverr, Upwork, & Flexjobs. I’d argue that those are all totally counterproductive if your goal is sustainable income as a freelancer. Part of why I’ve been able to scale my freelance business to a solid 6-figures is because I haven’t undervalued my time. I don’t work for less than $100/hour. The only exception is if I’m helping out a close friend or something––and even then I’ll only do it if it’s not taking time away from my core clients. Fiverr, Upwork, and the like rely on you not knowing (or at least not being confident in) your worth. It’s a race to the bottom on pricing. You will never be able to compete with the prices of people in developing economies. Why? At my last in-house job, we had a satellite office in the Philippines. We had some super talented graphic designers, coders, and data scientists at that office. We paid well; like way above what was considered a good salary in that part of the world. And the highest-paid employee in that office made $12k per year. You’ll die of starvation trying to compete with that. There is no advantage to being second-cheapest, and you’ll never be able to undercut pricing in economies where a dollar is worth 10 times what it is in the US. Before I figured out the right way to run a freelance business I created profiles on all those sites. I put what I thought I was worth on there and got laughed at. “You have to start low and build up your reviews and blah blah blah blah. Then you can charge more.” Riiiiiiiiight. Hard pass. I put in a long time to learn the skills I have. And more importantly, I know that what I do provides a return on investment for my customers. That’s all that matters. There is no benefit to diving into bloody waters. The sharks are already swarming and most of them have been there long enough to know where to wait to snatch up the next fish. The people who succeed on those platforms have already been at it for a long time, and they’re ok with living project to project. I, for one, can’t live like that. It means I’ll either be scrambling every time a job ends (because my income ends with it) or I’ll be constantly splitting my focus between the work I’m on and finding the next client. Sustainable income comes from a few things: • Finding the RIGHT types of clients • Finding some uses for your skill-set that require ongoing management AND provide a clear ROI (hint, hint: ads management and email marketing are something every freelancer should learn) • Getting those clients to pay you a monthly retainer to manage those services When I abandoned those services and learned how to find my own clients (I still have yet to make a single cold call, by the way) I went from struggling to pay my bills to having a 6-figure business and a 25-hour workweek. That last point is crucial, because if the work you’re doing brings in more money than you’re charging then you can charge whatever you want and businesses will gladly pay it. You become an asset rather than an expense. High-paying clients understand that to get a premium service, they have to pay a premium. Those types of clients are NOT looking for freelancers on Fiverr, Upwork, etc. If you want sustainable income, your time and energy will be much better spent on actual effective customer acquisition techniques. Those platforms all take a cut AND set the terms of how you interact with your potential customers. Even high-end staffing agencies set the price and then take an obscene percentage of the payout. And for what? For brokering an introduction that you can set up yourself. When I abandoned those services, and learned how to find my own clients (I still have yet to make a single cold call, by the way) I went from struggling to pay my bills to having a 6-figure business and a 25-hour work week. #OneFightAgainstCorona (Part 4) __The five greatest challenges after we defeat this global pandemic... The CoronaVirus is a very serious health challenge, affecting the whole world. Even as we go through a very difficult time, we must not lose sight of the fact that we will defeat it, and we will return to normal life. Some of us are beginning to think ahead and I'd like you to as well. Here is my own list of the five greatest challenges. Let me know if you have others that I did not see: #1. Restarting our economies; #2. Getting children back to school; #3. Food security; #4. Creating jobs again; #5. Other neglected diseases. As one of you wrote here on the platform last week (Di Hoza), we must be "solution seekers"! Let's get going. #1. Restarting our economies. Shutting down an economy through a “lockdown” is completely uncharted waters. We have never been this way before, as countries, on such a large scale. An economy is like a big blast furnace that’s used in making steel… It is designed to operate all the time, and if you shut it down, it gets damaged. It is that simple! No matter what happens on the health front with COVID-19, our economies have been seriously damaged in more ways than an untrained eye can tell you right now. You will see in the next few months, weeks or even years what I mean. This is economics, and not a religious class, guys. I, too, have faith: “We have been given a sound mind” so that we can reason carefully and act with knowledge and wisdom. Our economies have been seriously damaged, and a lot of people are hurting without jobs, as businesses, big and small, close down. Exports are damaged. Almost every type of business, of every size, has been seriously damaged. Thousands of businesses have shut down for good, and will not re-open. Millions are now jobless! Those who return to work will be fearful, and not sure who they can even sit next to, or who might infect them. The world of work will be radically overhauled to create safe working environments again. It will not be easy, and it will take true leadership across the world. Rich and powerful countries are already pumping $Trillions to try and jump-start their economies. __Africa does not have this kind of money. Africa's smartest economists and business leaders are busy spending sleepless nights grappling with this! #2. Getting children back to school. According to UNESCO, the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting almost 1.6bn children and youth in 188 countries, as of 7 April. This is more than 91% of the world's enrolled students. Take a look at this UNESCO link and calculate how many young learners are impacted in Africa as whole, and in your own country: https://en.unesco.org/covid19/educationresponse It seems unbelievable, but it's true. We don’t yet know when, or how we get them back to school safely. The world has never seen anything like it before. If we don’t get these kids back to schools, colleges and universities, our future is gone! The impact could take decades to resolve. For me this is Priority #1! #3. Food security. Africa imported food worth around $50bn last year. It was everything -- rice, maize, beef, chicken, fish and much more. With our exports like oil and tourism smashed, we don’t have the money to import food. The shortage of foreign exchange will likely also lead to high food prices across the board. Several countries that export food like rice and maize have suggested they are going to ban exports until the situation improves. Local #Agripreneurs, this is your time! We have to grow and trade our own food! If prices of basic commodities shoot up in some parts of the world, it could lead to rioting or worse. #4. Creating jobs again. Even without COVID-19 ravaging our countries, the global lockdowns have likely destroyed more than 25m formal jobs across Africa, with industries like hospitality and tourism hardest hit. The small business sector has no reserves to hold on to workers, if there is no money coming in. If this goes on another three months, we could see 100m jobs wiped out.

Series of Strategies for Reviving the Economy in the "post-Covid 19" era By Ajith Nivard Cabraal, Former Governor, Central Bank of Sri Lanka, and Prime Minister's Senior Advisor on Economic Affairs Strategy 1: Return approximately 20% of the balances amounting to around Rs.500 billion of the Employees Provident Fund, lying to the credit of members, directly to the Members. As is well known and documented, the Sri Lankan economy has suffered tremendously from the gradual and continuous deterioration of the economy for 5 years from 2015 to 2019. It has also been devastated by the shock of the Easter Sunday bombings in April 2019. In response, the new Government had already given a substantial stimulus in January 2020 in the form of a significant tax cut and a far reaching debt moratorium. In that background, in the face of the current Covid-19 pandemic, Sri Lanka unfortunately does not now possess the fiscal space to provide a stimulus of the kind practised by certain advanced economies, whereby huge tax refunds or outright grants have been provided to the public in order to boost consumption and other economic activity. Nevertheless, as an alternative to providing a direct fiscal hand-out, around Rs.500 billion could be infused into the economy by unconditionally returning around 20% of the EPF Member balances to the respective Members, out of the total of around Rs.2,500 billion lying to the credit of the EPF members as at 31st December 2019. This simple and uncomplicated return of capital could be a useful and viable alternative that could achieve the same outcome of serving as an economic stimulus, without any fiscal burden being placed on the Government. In addition, this newly created "equity" in the hands of around 2,500,000 individuals would expand further and perhaps even double, as many recipients are likely to leverage such funds with borrowings from lending institutions, which would provide a further boost to the economy. By "unlocking" this vast pool of funds at the present time, and through the release of such finances which would be circulating amongst millions of people, many other "knock-on" benefits would also accrue to the people and the economy. Among such benefits would be: (1) enhanced economic growth being recorded in the economy due to the higher investment and consumption as a result of the funds infusion. (2) many persons being able to settle their high interest debt which is presently crippling them. (3) new business ventures being created as a result of persons with entrepreneurial ideas and abilities being able to embark on new business ventures. (4) more opportunities opening out for the financial sector to lend, since persons who are embarking on new economic activity are likely to leverage their new equity with debt. (5) business confidence being enhanced and optimism rekindled due to the higher level of economic activity as a result of investment of the newly released "locked" savings, in the wider economy. (6) an upturn being recorded in the small-scale construction activity in all parts of the country, which is now at a standstill. (7) enhanced employment opportunities arising in the Small and Medium Enterprises sector of the country, leading to lower social tensions. (8) Government tax revenues improving due to the rise of the level of economic activity throughout the economy.
