I invite your attention to the subject of sickness. We cannot avoid it; it will visit each of us in turn. 1. Universal Prevalence Sickness is universal and everywhere. Men, women, and children sicken and die.Sickness is among all classes and of every description. Why is sickness universal? The only explanation that satisfies is that which the Bible gives. Something has come into the world that has stripped man of his original privileges, in a word: sin. “Sin entered into the world, and death by sin” (Rom 5:12). Sin is the cause of all the sickness, disease, pain, and suffering that prevail on the earth (Gen 3:17-19). 2. General Benefits Can sickness be good? I ask all who find it hard to reconcile the prevalence of disease and pain with the love of God, to mark what is going on in the world around them. Observe the extent to which men constantly submit to present loss for the sake of future gain (as in starting a business), present sorrow for the sake of future joy (disciplining a child), present pain for the sake of future health (strenuous exercise). The seed is thrown into the ground and rots, but we sow in the hope of a future harvest (Joh 12:24). Now, apply this great principle to God’s government of the world. Understand that God allows pain, sickness, and disease, not because He loves to vex man, but because He desires to benefit man’s heart, mind, conscience, and soul to all eternity. By sickness, God checks the ravages of sin and the devil among men’s souls. What are the ways that God uses sickness for the good of mankind? 1) Sickness helps to remind men of death. Most men live as if they were never going to die. Sickness reminds them that they have to die as well as to live (Heb 9:27; Rom 6:23). 2) Sickness helps to make men think seriously of God, their souls, and the world to come. A severe disease has a surprising power to bring these thoughts before the eyes of a man’s soul (Mar 8:36). 3) Sickness helps to soften men’s hearts and teach them wisdom. The natural heart is as hard as a stone. It can see no happiness except in this world. A long illness exposes the emptiness of what the world calls “good” things, and teaches us to hold them with a loose hand (1Jo 2:15-17). 4) Sickness helps to level and humble us. We are all naturally proud and high-minded. A sick bed is a mighty tamer of such thoughts. It forces on us the mighty truth that we are all dying creatures who will soon stand side by side before God on Judgment Day. Surely anything that teaches that lesson is good (Jam 4:10). 5) Finally, sickness helps to test men’s profession of faith to see if true or false. Disease is sometimes most useful to a man in exposing his lack of a new heart (Joh 3:3). Surely, anything that makes us find the real character of our faith is good (2Co 13:5). If sickness in a wicked world can help to make men think of God and their souls, then sickness confers benefits on mankind. We have no right to murmur at sickness; we ought rather to thank God for it. It is a testimony to God’s power and rule. So long as we have a world wherein there is sin, it is a mercy that it is a world wherein there is sickness. 3. Special Duties Sickness Calls For Now we ask, in a world of disease and death, what ought we to do? Sickness requires that we live habitually prepared to meet God. Sickness is a reminder of death. Death is the door through which we must all pass to judgment. Judgment is the time when we must at last see God face to face. The first lesson that each should learn in a sick and dying world is to prepare to meet his God (Joh 1:12). When are you prepared to meet God? Never, till your iniquities are forgiven and your sin covered! The blood of Jesus Christ alone can cleanse those sins away (1Jo 5:7). The righteousness of Christ alone can make you acceptable in God’s sight. Faith, simple childlike faith, alone can give you an part in Christ and His benefits (Rom 5:8; Eph 2:8-9). Sickness demands that we live habitually ready to bear it patiently. Sickness is no doubt a hard thing for flesh and blood. To bear sick

Eerder deze week sprak ik met een klant. Ze zei…’Petra, ik zat in een waanzinnige dip de laatste tijd, maar nu zie ik licht aan het eind van de tunnel. Het is mij duidelijk hoeveel ik op tafel heb laten liggen de afgelopen jaren. Ik was teveel uren aan het sloven. Ik ben er helemaal klaar mee en ben zo blij dat ik online makkelijker klanten binnenhaal. Dit had ik 5 jaar geleden moeten weten.’ Zij is niet de eerste persoon die dit tegen mij zegt. Het achterliggende verhaal is dat ze steeds van die losse freelance klussen aannam. Dat eiste haar tol. Ze was altijd moe. Altijd druk. Altijd ‘aan’. Begrijp me niet verkeerd. Hard werken voor je klanten is prima. Klanten zijn fantastisch. De ondernemers waar ik mee werk geven hun grootste waarde aan hun klanten. Ze zijn hoogopgeleid, vlot en vaak midden in de dertig. Hun agenda staat altijd bol van de opdrachten. Ze hebben een gezin en een sociaal netwerk. En dat geldt ook voor de klant die ik sprak. Ze staat als zelfstandige midden in het leven. En op het oog is het plaatje aan de buitenkant ‘perfect’. Alleen voor haarzelf en haar bedrijf zag het er niet goed uit. Gelukkig heeft ze de omslag naar online gemaakt. Ik werk inmiddels 10 jaar met zelfstandigen die een topexpert zijn in hun vak en veel hebben bereikt. Ze klaagden allen over de afhankelijkheid van 1 soort inkomen. Ik heb jaren geleden de omslag naar online gemaakt. Het bezorgt mij nu veel vrije tijd en rust. Dat had ik destijds niet als freelancer met losse klussen. Ik kon niet mijn creativiteit kwijt. Daarnaast voelde ik mij niet vrij. If you want to get better at advertising, you need to change the way you shave... - Most people think that advertising is “hard”, mostly because they’ve tried either to do it themselves or they hired an agency to do the heavy lifting. - If you don’t know how advertising works, it’s really hard to make it work by hiring someone else. Believe it or not...
“We’ve given you a 40-cent raise, Payton, congratulations!” I can still picture the exact moment when my boss said those words to me for the last time. I had just graduated from the University of Memphis… And I was stuck in a dead-end retail job I took as a “temporary” gig four years early… Because I still hadn’t figured out how to replace that much-needed income. At the time, my days looked pretty average. Wake up around 7 when the alarm clock told me it was time to go to work… Hit snooze 5 or 6 times until I remembered I couldn’t afford to quit yet… And drag myself into work around 8 to prep the store. Sure, I knew I could do so much better with my time… And I never pictured myself turning into the typical 9-5 drone… But the job was easy, you know? Mindless too, and the pay was normally “good enough” to get by. Honestly, if you had told me I was 21 days away from doing better than a neurosurgeon… Working on my own schedule, part-time, from anywhere with a cell connection… I probably would’ve called you crazy. So there I was… I got into the store a little past 8 that morning… And I was folding shirts in the mens’ section, next to the main entrance… When my boss (Hank) shuffled his penguin-looking frame through the door. Like any other day, he was wearing his dirty old New Balances, blue golf shirt, and his oversized Khakis. He looked like he had been breathing that recycled “retail store” air for the past 40 years. “Gather ‘round, ya peppercorns. We’ve got a raise to celebrate!” (I still have no idea what peppercorns are) “Over the last year, this guy’s put in 1,800 hours of hard work, he’s gotten great customer reviews, and I want y’all to follow his example. “We’ve given you a 40-cent raise, Payton, congratulations!” I think I cracked a half-smile, but I can’t remember. What I do remember though, is looking around and watching my co-workers clap. They looked dead… totally absent. Probably living some far-off world where they weren’t trading their soul for $14 an hour. I got home that night feeling like I had come out of a coma… Like I had finally “came to” after living on autopilot for months. I still remember lying awake that night, staring at the ceiling fan above me as I thought to myself over and over… “40 lousy cents? “I’ve traded the last year of my life for 40 cents?! “Where’s all the meaning? Where’s all the passion? Where’s all the adventure?” I knew I couldn’t go another day without making changes, so I called in sick the next day. For the first time (probably ever) I felt HUNGRY. No more scraping by on 40-cent raises… No more watching my life slip by, day-by-day… No more living on somebody else’s terms. I had made a decision. Live or die, before that month was over… I was going to QUIT that meaningless 9-to-5… Start living life on my own terms… And take control over my future, and my potential. And you know what happened? It has nothing to do with anything you’ve heard about online… So you can forget about dropshipping… Forget about affiliate marketing… Online courses? Forget about it… Start an agency? Garbage… Real estate? Garbage… Consulting? Garbage… I already knew those business models take forever to get moving… And since I still had a job, I didn’t want to add work to my life. If you want to get better at advertising, you need to change the way you shave... - Most people think that advertising is “hard”, mostly because they’ve tried either to do it themselves or they hired an agency to do the heavy lifting. - If you don’t know how advertising works, it’s really hard to make it work by hiring someone else. Your business is just not ready for it… - One thing I’ve learned after spending over 7 M last year, is that GREAT advertising consists of some really specific strategies, applied over and over again. - Human psychology doesn’t change that much. And I did it selling articles on Fiverr for $4/pop (they’d charge $5, but took $1 off the top). - At that time, things became so tight (financially speaking), that I had to choose between putting food on the table or heating up my house. - So there I was, churning out as many articles as I could in one day. Typing for 12 hours straight, with my fingers swollen by the cold. - But hey! At least I was making a buck online, which was considered impossible 10 years ago (at least in Argentina, where I’m from). - Fast forward to today, I manage hundreds of thousands of $ every month in advertising. And I work with some of our thought leaders in our industry. - What changed? - The fact that I now can write ads that compel people to click, opt-in and buy. - Today, it’s easier for me because I’ve developed some frameworks and templates that stood the test of time. - Every time I put these frameworks to work, they win. “We’ve given you a 40-cent raise, Payton, congratulations!” I can still picture the exact moment when my boss said those words to me for the last time. I had just graduated from the University of Memphis… And I was stuck in a dead-end retail job I took as a “temporary” gig four years early… Because I still hadn’t figured out how to replace that much-needed income. At the time, my days looked pretty average. Starting an online business is complicated and confusing, but it sorta saved my life (let me explain)... It was 9:00pm and my lungs we’re closing up on me… This was about a year and a half ago while I was still working at my old 9-5 job doing private security for a fortune 500 company. Out of nowhere I began having a severe asthma attack. The thing was… I had an entire hour left on shift and I just couldn’t leave my post. Leaving my post early could mean possible termination. (Which was in a few hours) The only thing on my mind was my family and my future. For the past 2 years I had been working brutally hard behind the scenes. Trying to build an online business with little to no results. I was addicted to success and I swore to myself that I would break though so I could finally leave security and give my family the life they always deserved. A life of freedom. Which deep down I knew was possible… Because if others can do it, I can too. Right?
