We made $10,032 in ONE MONTH by giving away a Free Week of Karate... And by the way… We marched in exactly ZERO parades… We rented ZERO booths at ZERO festivals… We did ZERO demos at ZERO events… We passed out ZERO flyers.... We spoke at ZERO schools... ️ We cut ZERO cakes with a sword… We did ZERO birthday parties, ZERO board break-a-thons, ZERO library talks, and well… I think you get the point. I’m not saying that stuff doesn’t work. I am just saying that there are only so many “things” you can do and only so many hours in the day/week/month that you can spend out there trying to get students in the door...I mean you do have a martial arts school to run for crying out loud. Not to mention, it’s emotionally and physically draining to be out in the community trying to do your best to promote your school, only to return with a few names on a list and hardly any prospect of actually enrolling any serious students by the time it’s all said and done. Here’s what I usually hear when I ask a Martial Arts school owner how an event went: “Well, we got a lot of great feedback.” - OR - “People loved it.” - OR - “We got our name out there.” - OR - “There were a lot of people there who seemed really interested.” Now, that’s all fine and good, and makes you feel like you didn’t waste your entire weekend out there, but let’s get real for a second... When I ask “How many STUDENTS did you enroll?” I bet the results sound a lot more dismal. Here’s the thing: The only way to truly grow your school without burning out in today’s digital age is with a marketing strategy. It’s not about the next big “platform” and it’s not about using videos or flashy stock images, or “funnels” or any other shiny object… It’s definitely not about burning yourself out and punishing your staff by sending them out into the community with a prize wheel and flyers. And it’s also NOT about watering down your curriculum or becoming a McDojo/Belt Factory The truth is that the ONLY way to consistently enroll new PAYING students WITHOUT sacrificing your art is to develop a Marketing STRATEGY. Quality instruction and a great class curriculum are obviously required to KEEP students, but it’s not enough to GET them in the door. Imagine one of your white belt students entering a competition for Black Belts with a haphazard strategy. Imagine if their peers convinced them that it was a good idea to just go into the ring and swing their arms around and flail like a crazy person. Is it possible for them to land a few punches or kicks? Perhaps… could they even win a few fights? Maybe. But is that the best strategy for long term success? You decide. Here’s what I know: There is an awful trend of Martial Arts School owners flailing around, swinging at anything that moves with absolutely NO STRATEGY when it comes to advertising their schools. And it’s not entirely their fault. They are copying their competition without knowing that it’s not working for them either. Look, there’s a new way to get students and it’s WAY easier and MUCH MORE effective and PROFITABLE than what you’re probably doing right now. It starts by offering a Free Week of Classes… (but it definitely does not end there) You see, contrary to what some “gurus” are saying, a Free Trial does NOT devalue your program. That is utter nonsense. Think about it… did the Free trial of Netflix™ devalue the service for you? How about the Free Trial of HBO, Uber, or Amazon? …of course not! We Have Been Enrolling Paying Students for Virtual Classes Since Day One... Even though ALL the old ways of marketing are completely gone… We can’t march in any parades… We can’t set up booths at festivals… We can’t do demos at any events… We can’t pass out any flyers.... We can’t speak at any schools... We can’t do any birthday parties… We can’t do parent’s night out, board break-a-thons, library talks, and well… I think you get the point. Options are limited to online strategies. And that’s an area I know A LOT about. I also know that many martial arts school owners are scrambling now and want to run ads for their virtual classes but trying to figure out the offer, and the wording and what images to use, or what video to use, or how to follow up, set an appointment, do an intro over the phone or computer, collect a credit card virtually...I mean you do have a {virtual} martial arts school to {figure out how to} run for crying out loud. Not to mention, it’s emotionally and physically draining to be setting up classes for your existing students over Zoom or whatever platform you’re using, trying to do your best to just keep your school afloat, only to end your day on Facebook’s ad manager to see hardly any prospect of actually enrolling any serious students by the time it’s all said and done. Here’s what I usually hear when I ask a Martial Arts school owner how their ads are doing: “Well, we got a lot of great feedback.” - OR - “People loved it.” - OR - “We got our name out there.” - OR - “There were a lot of people there who seemed really interested and clicked the ‘LIKE’ button and ‘ENGAGED’ with the post.” Now, that’s all fine and good, and makes you feel like you didn’t waste your entire ad budget, but let’s get real for a second... When I ask “How many STUDENTS did you enroll?” I bet the results sound a lot more dismal. Here’s the thing: The only way to truly grow your school in today’s current lockdown situation is with a marketing strategy. It’s not about the “platform” and it’s not about using videos or flashy stock images, or “funnels” or any other shiny object… It’s definitely not about burning yourself out ‘trying to figure it out’ and letting down your staff, watching your existing student base disintegrate with no plan of replacing those students. And it’s also NOT about “going nationwide,” watering down your curriculum or becoming a McDojo/Belt Factory We know that this is going to change the industry and possibly even our society forever. Burned out...that’s how a lot of the martial arts school owners I talk to sound.... They’ve tried “everything” and “nothing” seems to work. They march in every parade… They get a booth at every festival… They do demos at every kids’ expo… They canvas the neighborhood with flyers....
