Documentary Post: I recently watched a documentary, “ Harbor from the Holocaust”. It tells the story of Jews from primarily Germany and Austria that sought safety in Shanghai during the Holocaust. This incredible story discusses how the refugees were let into the country and the struggles they faced. The Jews who fled faced harsh living conditions, persecution which led them into make shift ghettos, as well as the Japanese invasion into China. This is an amazing story and a topic I wasn’t as familiar with. I highly recommend watching this documentary, which I have linked below. I will also be doing additional research into this topic and post my blog article in two weeks.

Just as the U.S. President said on Twitter that "the U.S. certainly does maintain a policy option, under various conditions, of a complete #decoupling from China", he ordered U.S. firms to #ditch China completely. However, the attitudes of U.S. enterprises show just how difficult it will be for the U.S. to exercise this order. Many of them grumbled that they can't get more of China fast enough. On the contrary, in the post-pandemic era, China's #economic recovery has been faster than the U.S. market expected. #DeadlyDifferences

Being named in Forbes’ 30 under 30 Asia 2020 list is certainly an achievement for CUHK alumni Chester Szeen and Teresa Chan, co-founders of financial management platform Mellow. Their inspiring achievement saw the duo being selected from around 3,500 nominees for their smart savings app, which targets the 6-18 year age group. Mellow aims to helps school-age children and adolescents learn about saving their pocket money, financial goal setting and the impact of their financial decisions, to build a healthy relationship with money. “Our app provides a safe place for kids, with the help of their parents, to experiment and fail, and develop good financial habits while they are young. There is a need for kids to feel comfortable to manage digital money and understand how it works when they are at a young age,” Teresa told the South China Morning Post. And, as an added bonus, the app allows parents to encourage young savers to reach their app goals through rewards. The award-winning app gives children access to real-time money transfers, goal-based savings, interactive challenges for rewards and automatic expense tracking all on a mobile platform. Acknowledging the Forbes honor on LinkedIn recently, Chester thanked his team, promising to “work even harder to make Mellow a great solution for future generations”. Over 60% of training Centers are facing a survival crisis. Wang Wenbo, Secretary-General of the China Private Education Association Said: Today, more than 60% of training institutions are facing a survival crisis. According to survey, a total of 12000 educational institutions were closed in 2019. There should be more this year. During the epidemic, a number of training institutions, such as IT educational institutions Brotherhood Company, fun Journey, Weile Education, and Ron Children's English, declared "bankruptcy". Not only that, the institutions disbanded teachers' teams, owed teachers' salaries, stopped operations, and news of broken funding chains emerged one after another. The difficulty of the organization means that it is also difficult for employees. Anan, a junior high school math teacher at a small and medium-sized educational institution in Xiamen, her class was cut half in March, even though she was transformed online. On the other hand, in order to survive, the organization reduced the basic salary of only a dozen teachers to 70%, resulting in her salary of only 2500 in March. These are all very common now. Fortunately, classes will resume soon in May, and everything will slowly get better. Click the link to join our group. This book presents around one hundred letters from Singapore, China, Malaysia, Thailand, the USA, and Canada, including photographic reproductions of the original letters, transcriptions in Chinese characters, and English translations, where necessary with explanatory notes. Most of the letters collected in Chinese and non-Chinese archives, and in this sourcebook, were products of the Qiaopi system as traditionally defined. A few, especially some to and from North America, especially in the second half of the twentieth century, went through the Post Office, and were not handled by Chinese remittance companies. Not all the letters accompanied remittances. Available at https://www.worldscientific.com/worldscibooks/10.1142/11119

#OneFightAgainstCorona (Part 5) __Let’s talk #Solutions! As Africa’s new generation of entrepreneurs here on this platform, if you have other #Solutions to extend this discussion, please comment below. If not, go ahead and read and study, then come up with something to add. #We Study to Do! In my last post, I mentioned five key challenges: #1. Restarting our economies. #2. Getting children back to school. #3. Food security. #4. Creating jobs again. #5. Other neglected diseases. There’s a great deal to focus on, but as promised last week, here are some of the ideas being discussed: _#Debt relief We need relief of both international and domestic debts. I have commented on this a lot in the last few weeks. Bilateral and multilateral partners must give Africa debt relief, which will allow us to have more foreign exchange. My own favorite is #Domestic Debt Relief: governments and state-owned companies immediately pay their debts to businesses. This will pump liquidity into the productive sector overnight, and create real jobs! _#Stimulus plan America, Japan, China, and the EU have pumped over $5Tn into their economies to help their businesses, and to put cash into consumers’ hands to buy goods and services. African economies don’t have the financial resources to do similar things without pumping up inflation. There is, however, a clever way that economists have found to unlock this kind of stimulus: the big industrial countries (US, China, EU, Japan) can allow Africa to access what are known as Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) issued through the IMF. This would not be debt but is a clever financial instrument. I’m part of a group that has been advocating that SDRs of $100bn be released for Africa, unconditionally. The emergency we are in warrants such a measure, as these large nations have themselves shown in pumping so much stimulus into their own economies. I personally believe that the release of these SDRs should be directed at Africa’s domestic private sector: #Your businesses! It’s a complex subject, but your Finance Minister and Central Bank Governor know what I mean (and the smart ones like it!) _#Turn COVID-19 into a boon for manufacturing in Africa! Rahm Emanuel, President Obama’s first Chief of Staff, once famously said, “Don’t throw away a serious crisis.” Getting on top of COVID-19 requires millions of essential products like masks, protective equipment, disinfectants, chemicals, hospital supplies, and much more. We all know that our health care systems are mostly a mess, and now we have had a massive wake-up call! Why not turn into a “Marshall Plan on healthcare”?! We can begin a massive manufacturing capacity building, even as we build new hospitals for the future. African governments also need to liberalize the health sector, and call for more private investment. We are now calling for $15bn to be released by institutions like the World Bank and African Development Bank to support a major investment drive in public health. Extraordinary times call for extraordinary innovation, courage and vision. Let us not delay. To be continued. . .

I have had to do a lot of soul searching throughout this whole COVID-19 pandemic. This disaster has really brought out the best and worst in people, both at home in Australia and here in China. It saddens me to see people posting hateful things about Chinese people on social media - especially because I have been the target of discrimination myself recently. Firstly, I would like to preface this by saying that 99% of Chinese people are wonderful human beings that treat me with respect and dignity, and I am forever grateful for their hospitality while I’ve been in their country. However, over the past couple of days, I’ve been refused entry to establishments, I’ve had people ask to be seated away from me, I’ve had people say hurtful things to my face (and behind my back without realizing I can understand what they are saying perfectly) and I’ve received nasty messages on social media, all because I am a foreigner. It’s the subtle things too, like people sitting as far away from you as they can on public transport, that really eat away at you. Truth be told, because I am visible in the media here, I have been quite sheltered from the worst of it, because a lot of people feel as though they know me and therefore aren’t afraid of me, but I have foreign friends here who have experienced much worse, including death threats. That’s not even an exaggeration. I’ve seen restaurants post “No Foreigner” signs, and I’ve been successful in having them removed - with the help of the Guangzhou Government Service Hotline, so credit where credit is due. It is all borne out of fear. Now that COVID-19 is escalating overseas, (some) people here are scared. Scared that we have the virus. Not much dissimilar to how Chinese people were treated a month or two ago in Australia and other Western countries. It has been hard to face this animosity recently, especially since I have dedicated myself to building a life here and contributing to Chinese society. In the past, in a logical sense, I was able to sympathize with people who were discriminated against, but until you’ve actually experienced it yourself, you don’t really know what it’s like and how soul-crushing it is. As a white Australian male, I’ve never been discriminated against for just being me, until now. So, what I want to say is, please do not attack anybody for where they come from, or the color of their skin. It hurts. I’m 29 years old. I’ve been lucky to have lived for this long without facing this kind of nonsense. But there are people in Australia who have felt ostracized and excluded since the day of their birth. Just like I have put my heart and soul into making something of myself here, and being a productive member of society, hundreds of thousands of Chinese people are doing the same in Australia. Millions of people from other backgrounds are too. So next time you feel fear, or anger, or even suspicion surrounding this whole pandemic, don’t take it out on the person in the street who looks different to you. Think twice before you post something poisonous on social media also.

Did you ever have the feeling that doing INTERNATIONAL SALES FORECASTS feels like looking into a crystal ball? Do you know your company's real sales potential per country? We have worked with global sales organisations for more than 10 years. We have optimised forecasts and global sales numbers many times, always having a focus on inspiring our sales teams by using innovative and modern methods. And no: We are not suggesting you to ask your colleagues or the sales team for better numbers here and no: we are not trying to sell you expensive market research reports. Instead we want to draw your attention towards a better analytical understanding of the countries and markets you are selling into. While working with different companies and brands over the years we have realised that most of the sales forecasts happen on guess work or in better cases by only analysing historical sales data. To get a better perspective of your companies future global sales potential we have developed the SPT. SPT stands for Sales Potential Tool. This tool is based on a method which analyses global market data and helps you benchmarking your own sales figures. The method in general can help you improving your forecast by giving you a hole new future perspective for your sales potential for individual countries. Or do you already know how f.e. your sales numbers in the USA benchmark vs your sales figures in China or Japan or other markets? Or are you planning a market entry to a certain country and you need good estimates what to expect in terms of numbers? For sure having answers to those questions will give your business a distinct advantage over competitors who do not prepare such forecasts or those who prepare them poorly. The good news is, that as long as you can see this post online we are still offering our # in which we explain how the method works. Just click on the “Learn More” Button under or above this video and you’ll be redirected to the seminar page. Being 100% transparent is mandatory to us: Later in the online seminar we’ll be showing you a product for purchase, which can help you implementing the method. However, we promise that watching the free seminar alone already will bring you and your business great value and buying the product is not mandatory at any point. No matter how you’ll decide, you will surely get plenty of value from watching the online seminar and we are convinced that it will help you! So if you got curious, click on the link above or below this video now. We are looking forward to welcoming you on our seminar page!

#Urgent pause: Wash your hands, open your heart (Part 2) __Be part of the solution. My friends, you must pay attention (we have NOT been this way before) but do not panic. Instead, make a plan. Just about six weeks ago I wrote you here to alert you about the COVID-19 epidemic that had hit Wuhan, China. It’s now reached about 117 countries including around 18 nations across Africa. As of a few days ago, it’s been upgraded by the World Health Organization (WHO) from a global health emergency to a “pandemic” impacting most of the world. China’s situation has improved greatly now, and they have even sent some teams overseas to help Italy, the second worst hit country. As entrepreneurs, leaders in your communities, parents, students, innovators, I want you each to do your part wherever you are. Here’s a link to the latest WHO guidelines. Please share this post and information with everyone you know. It is up to you to ONLY share credible information. https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/advice-for-public On this link you'll see there some posters (which can be shared) with factual information and also guidelines: # Be safe. # Be smart. # Be kind. # Be supportive. # Be careful. # Be alert. # Be informed. # Be prepared. # Be part of the solution! (I added this one). Here is the most basic advice from scientists and health experts: (Don’t rely on rumors. They are dangerous): #1. Know the symptoms of COVID-19 and take them seriously. The main ones are: 1) shortness of breath, 2) cough, 3) fever, 4) deep tiredness. #2. Wash your hands with soap for at least 20 seconds, or use an alcohol-based hand rub. In many schools now they have the kids washing hands once an hour. (They suggest you can sing the song “Happy birthday” twice to yourself while washing, to know that about 20 seconds is up). Others say you can pray the Lord’s Prayer, which takes about 20 seconds... Take the time. #3. Don’t shake hands (it's a habit to break right now). Don’t touch your face. Cough/sneeze into your elbow. Don’t spit. This is all common sense for any illness. Tell others. #4. The virus can live on some surfaces for several days. On stairs, don't touch the railings, for instance. Clean your phone. Your pen. You get the idea. #5. Avoid crowds. By now you have all seen, for instance, how many hugely popular sporting events have been put on hold from EPL to Formula One to the entire NBA season. This is to avoid virus transmission in crowds. (The droplets that happen when you sneeze and cough can fly a long way!) Now what are you going to do with all that time you spent watching sport? #EntrepreneurIt! #6. If you think you might have COVID-19, don't just rush to a crowded health clinic, call them first. Isolate yourself, including from your family, but be sure to inform them you are not well. Meanwhile, if you're sick, don't cough or breathe onto anyone. Be smart. Remember: there is no cure yet for this new virus, but most people recover with proper treatment, so you must take it very seriously. #7. Experts say you can be infected by COVID-19 but still not have any symptoms for up to about 14 days. During this time, you can infect others and not know it. This is one reason why it's best to avoid crowds and unnecessary travel right now. #BeCareful. You can read the rest of the guidelines on the link I gave you. Above all, remember: being careful, smart, and prepared, does NOT mean being cruel to the sick or people you think might have COVID-19. No! __Open your hearts. We are all in this together. The whole world. Keep a safe "social distance" from others during this dangerous pandemic, but still be kind. Next moment that sick person could be you... “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”. As entrepreneurs, you are problem solvers. Think of vulnerable people in your communities like the elderly or frail who seem to be experiencing the worst symptoms of this virus across the world. Are there safe and hygienic ways, for example, you can help them get food delivered so they can avoid shopping i

Ever feel like the concept of building an online store is just a big sham... and that the only people succeeding are the ones selling courses? I think it's a valid concern, especially with all the "experts" that are online nowadays. I’ve run a digital marketing organization for nearly 10 years, had thousands of customers, and worked with over 300 clients as they were starting/growing their stores. And along that journey, I've learned a few insights that I think you'll find valuable, if you're trying to start or grow your own store: * Dropshipping from China is not a long-term model. But that's okay, because there's plenty of USA / domestic suppliers that want your business. * Selling products people DON'T need is the key to finding a product that sells consistently. I know it sounds strange, but it's true. * Shortcuts like countdown timers may be tempting, but you can create sales just by being authentic. * "Targeting" is more that just picking interests. It starts with the angle, and that feeds into the audience and ultimately the ad copy. * Spending money on ads is a waste, if you don't know how to properly evaluate the numbers. Once you learn how to read the data, ad spend turns from an expense into an investment. Some brutal honesty... Most people try and build an online store because they think it's some easy cash grab. It's not for those who are afraid of work. It's not for those who don't want to invest in ads, or invest in their business in general. Gotta have some capital. And being a bit tech savvy definitely helps. Gotta know how to click around and use a laptop, right ;) ? In short, YES... it's possible to build a successful online store. But most people are doing it all wrong, or listening to the "experts" I referenced above. The best way I can explain the fundamentals and step-by-step process of growing a store, is simply to show you. I've put together a 7,500+ word blog post, covering every aspect of building and growing a store. From product selection, ads, and more. It's free and you don't even need to opt-in. If you read it and it jives with you, you'll have an opportunity at the end to schedule a "Store Acceleration Call" with our office. What we’ll do on this call is simple — explore how we can accelerate the growth of your new or existing store. Simple enough, right? But I urge you to read this entire breakdown before considering a call with us. Here's the link: https://digitaltrafficace.com/the-definitive-guide-to-building-a-dropshipping-business-the-right-way/

We hereby express our strong dissatisfaction and firm protest to it. This fully revealed its ignorance and prejudice on China, deeply hurt the feelings of the Chinese people, and sparked strong indignation and condemnation among the Chinese people and the Nepali friends from all sectors. The new coronavirus pneumonia is an international public health emergency. The Chinese government has taken the most comprehensive and strongest measures to contain the epidemic, and those efforts are yielding positive effects. Many measures taken by the Chinese government are far beyond the suggestions of WHO and the requirement of the International Health Regulations. We have built several hospitals with thousands of beds within a very short period of time, which is a vivid manifestation of China’s speed, efficiency and power, and fully demonstrate the strengths of China’s system. As a responsible major country, China has been acting in an open and transparent manner from the very beginning and has been providing timely updates on the epidemic and pursuing international cooperation. We have not only done our very best to ensure the life, safety and health of the Chinese people but also effectively curbed the spread of the epidemic beyond our borders, making China’s contribution and sacrifice for global public health. More than 160 countries and international organizations, including Nepal and WHO, has commended China on multiple occasions for its responsible actions, speaking highly of China’s decisive response. Virus knows no borders. In 2009, the H1N1 flu outbreak in some western country had spread to 214 countries and regions, lead to more than 18449 deaths that very year. However, that country didn’t declare it as a national emergency until six months later. Nobody credited it to that country’s political system. Now, some western media took the opportunity to politicize the epidemic, criticize China’s efforts to fight against the epidemic and attack China’s political system. This is definitely a double-standard activity. Public opinion will prevail. Since the outbreak of epidemic, the Government of Nepal and Nepali people have expressed their support to China in various ways. We are deeply moved and will remember it forever. The Nepali media also reported the epidemic and the prevention and control measures taken by China in an objective and fair perspective. It has played an important role in helping the Nepali people to understand the true situation, strengthening the prevention of the epidemic, and promoting the international cooperation in joint prevention and control. We are ready to accept any meaningful suggestions on how to control the spread of the epidemic as soon as possible. But we firmly oppose any ulterior motives and even malicious attacks on the political systems of othe

Learn to pivot, to survive! (Part 2) __If you don’t #Pivot to #Digital in 2020, then you are no longer in business! One of the most important things you need to get out of your mind is this notion that there are some businesses, such as tech and telecoms companies, that are digital, whilst everything else is not. Not anymore! Everyone has to #Pivot to Digital, until everything about their business is Digital! Let me tell you, this is not going to be easy. During 2019, I tried to share with you examples of #Pivoting to Digital, as I did myself, as a way of showing you how it is done: # Do you remember @Clean City We developed an App to help schedule collection of waste from homes and businesses. It was probably a first in Africa, and certainly one of the first in the world. Today, Clean City has settled down into business that collects waste, and also delivers water to its customers, using a Digital App. # Do you remember @Vaya Tractor? We created a digital platform for “on-demand tractors”. Today thousands of hectares of land are being ploughed. Smallholder farmers no longer need to own a tractor. # Do you remember @Sasai App? What did we digitize with Sasai App? Well, we digitized so many things all at once including your local radio stations, so they can be heard from anywhere in the world. A friend of mine from Zambia told me that he watched a local football game on Zambian TV, from Canada, using Sasai Explore. I just listened to a Kenyan radio station from London! Now it’s your turn: I want you to discuss how you are going to #Pivot your business to Digital in 2020, which reminds me: Did you see this exchange I had with one of you, to show you what I mean that you can digitize anything? __Brume wrote, "Good morning Mr Strive Masiyiwa, thank you for taking time to educate us with your post regularly... I run a poultry farm, where I mainly sell eggs, it’s a modest farm for now, but with time I'm planning to expand it into selling different kinds of poultry birds in addition with the egg production. When I see you talk about marketing, advertising, pivoting, going digital... I feel sort of out of place, cause I don't know how to apply these things to my growing farm... If you can please help me with some pointers on how to apply these things to my farm, I'll be most grateful. Thanks sir”. To me, the best response to him, came from another member of the platform: __“Hi Brume. My friend and I are actually building an online marketplace that will allow guys like you to sell your farm produce to people around you and in markets you can’t easily reach. We’re based in Johannesburg, South Africa and are starting a pilot in end of January, 2020. Where are you based? Can we do something together and start selling your eggs online? Thank you”. This was beautiful! In case you missed it, remember what I wrote last week about the Chinese example (edited): “In 2006 China had 34m eCommerce shoppers. By 2018 (12 years) they had reached 600m! That is just insane. But as with everything they do, it was strategic once they understood how economic development is happening. Without it, no 4IR, and no AI! In China, almost everything you can think of now is bought and sold Online. The effect has changed the face of China including rural areas. It has driven economic growth and created tens of millions of jobs. It has also created some of the biggest companies on the planet. By contrast, Africa still has only 22m Online shoppers today. In the next 10 years it should easily reach 500m. It is inevitable at some point. __Our entrepreneurs -- like you -- have to tackle the numerous challenges that are currently making eCommerce difficult and even unviable. In doing so, many will emerge as our eCommerce champions! It might take 10 years or it might take 25 years, but one day African commerce will go Online as it has in America (70%), and China (now 47%). Today it is less than 2% of the population on the continent have had the experience of buying something Online. But it will happen! The real questions are these: # Will t
