I woke up one morning and realized I could not move, because my knees ached so much. That was two years ago and since then pain is a term I know more than I know the lines on my palms. I am Matt, and I am fifty-five years old. When I was fifty-three years old, I was diagnosed with knee arthritis and since then, I have lived my life expecting pain. Before arthritis, I was a basketball coach, who enjoyed teaching young boys of a local high school. My life had fewer restrictions, but all that changed with arthritis. I tried to do the things I was used to doing, until the flares became unbearable. It was so much that I could no longer coach. I succumbed to the medications I was told to take like, Cymbalta, Capsaicin and several hyaluronic acid injections. ‘How long will I take these medications?’ I asked the doctor and he replied ‘for life!’ It made me feel like not only would I take so many medications all my life, but I would also experience aches all my life. This new realization made living tough, as I dreaded another day of aches. I expected aches even before they came. My sickness affected my relationships with family and friends. It became hard for people to keep up with my mood changes and the worst of all is that I was not sleeping at night, due to so much pain and stress. I have tried many things, but nothing gave me a more lasting solution. There was always an increase in flares, especially during cold weather. Sometimes I would get so stiff, with swollen knees and general malaise. Through research, I discovered that diet was linked with inflammation. My diet was made of sugar laden foods, gluten and dairy foods, which trigger the release of inflammatory messengers called cytokines, which drive inflammatory diseases like arthritis. So I cut out bread, pasta, most processed foods, and dairy. Consequently, I experienced less symptoms and I began to sleep better at night. I also discovered that taking collagen with vitamin B12 daily, using ice on my knees and going to acupuncture sessions, also helped reduce my symptoms and made my life a lot easier. Also, using a knee brace two hours before bed kept down the built-up body fluid in my knees. This helped reduce the swelling and made sure I felt better during the day. However, I got an even better solution when I was introduced to knee sleeves.
