What they don’t tell you about selling Chinese goods in Australia. Hi my name is Pinar Parry (and the below is a cheesy pic of me in the news). I created this little bracelet that sold $1m worth in Australia in just over 12 months. Let’s just say while it was successful on the surface, there would be things I would do differently a second time around that could of earn't me many millions several times over. Want to know what they are? I bet you do! So let’s get into it! It begins with getting carried away with an idea I thought was “funny and cool” versus, a product that had real growth potential. This is a major flaw for most new entrepreneurs. They see something and go, “ohhhh I like it" and fall in love which leads to cognitive blindness in the following BIG issues, which are: 1. The fact that the product was designed for Australians. How? Cos it swore like a sailor and used language that was native to us. Nothing wrong with that, but getting something made in China, specifically for a population of 24m? Obviously it helped make it successful in our home country (because we used highly targeted messaging), but from a growth perspective, it didn't make much sense. And while we expanded to the UK where there were enough potty mouths there that also enjoyed our quotes, the product simply didn't have enough of a point of difference to create demand on a big enough scale. 2. The next was having far too many SKUs’ (and moving parts!) Many SKU’s (variants and items in an online store) are FINE if… a) Your business is servicing a HUGE population like the US and the turnover is enough to warrant it, or b) Each item doesn’t have 100 moving parts to assemble (Like the bracelet did - hello custom box, custom labels and so on). Both things our business didn’t have. 3. Creating a product that isn't a consumable. The problem with things like jewelry and fashion is, you need to keep creating a new version to keep people interested. Unlike "a consumable" that people come back for after they run out. Non-consumables are fine if the audience is big enough, each item doesn't have 100 moving parts to assemble (see above), but in the absence of all the above - the model is critically flawed. 4. Not using the raw materials of the beautiful country we live in. Want to know how to go big? Create something the world is willing to WAIT FOR, to be shipped across oceans, and they are hungry for. People aren’t willing to wait weeks for a little Chinese made bracelet no matter how “customised” it is. Truth bomb. Why? Because it’s not THAT special. Which mean we have basically capped our growth to a population of 24m - even though we can essentially reach, via Facebook ads, 7 billion shoppers. People value locally made, clean and green more than ever before - aka products made in Australia! So despite ALL OF THE ABOVE mistakes, I still figured out how to generate more than 99% of other online stores out there - go figure. But life would of been exponentially easier had I not. Today we invite you to read this review by a fellow Blogger on the concept of Tourism Enclaves proposed Prime Minister Allen Chastanet. A REVIEW OF PM CHASTANET'S TOURISM ENCLAVE CONCEPT By - Minerva Ward Regarding the video circulating with the Prime Minister talking about a slow reopening of the tourism industry- The country will eventually have to start reopening. And while the PM did not state a specific date, what he’s suggesting is a responsible approach that will minimize the risk while dealing with the reality that life will eventually have to get back to normal. Are we going to wait until there are no more COVID cases in the world to open up? Or until there is a vaccine? That is still a few years away and no country or economy in the world can remain in lockdown for this extensive time. China, many European countries (including Italy) some Canadian provinces and some US states are all doing a slow open. And St Lucia should do the same. St Lucia currently has no confirmed COVID cases; all 60 tests done between April 21-24 have come back negative. This is good news. Hopefully we can see full lifting of the internal restrictions by May to allow all businesses to re-open. In my humble opinion, we should start opening our borders by July to allow St Lucians stranded abroad to get home, and to restart our biggest economic earner: tourism. The approach the Prime Minister is proposing is a responsible approach which can work for all the bigger all-inclusives like Coconut Bay, Sandals, Royalton which have extensive amenities on property including pools, restaurants, a wide array of entertainment etc. It can also work for some of the smaller niche hotels like Anse Chastanet, Cap Marion, Jade Mountain and even a Bay Gardens Beach Resort. Is it ideal? No. Is half a loaf better than none? Yes. While it will take some time to get back to normal, there are tourists who would like to come and remain on property for a week or two, enjoy the sun, pool, beach, on-property restaurants etc. An enclave concept can work although it would need to be branded, marketed and communicated properly so tourists know before they book what the rules are and what they would be committing to. And with lower occupancies, there would be ample room to lodge staff who are able to stay on property for an extended period. While admittedly a novel concept in St Lucia, in larger remote resort areas around the world like ski resorts, chalets etc, staff live on property. This would certainly be different to what we are accustomed to, but we are going to have to think outside the box, develop creative and novel approaches on the way forward, try things that may require a steep learning curve and things that may not be quite the ideal or what we’re used to. This disease has been known to be highly infectious and lethal in nearly all cases, and this was demonstrated when it was first identified in 1984 in China, where it killed 14 million rabbits in 9 months (1,2). There is clear, documented evidence that the RHD Virus can be transmitted via direct contact, carcasses, insects (particularly flies) and inanimate objects (2). Furthermore, the evidence suggests that bodily secretions and excretions likely contain the virus which make them all vectors or modes of infection, given the fact that the virus is viable for long periods of time (2). The practice of releasing captured hares that survive the coursing in different areas to where they were originally found further adds to the danger of the infection becoming endemic. Considering that the Irish Mountain Hare is a protected species under the Wildlife Act of 1974 and the Berne Convention 1979, and is known to be in danger due to the invasion of the European Brown Hare, measures to prevent the spread of RHD are imperative to ensure its survival and the preservation of our ecological heritage (3). Clearly, the evidence is strongly in favour of continuing the suspension of hare coursing, and suggests that it was the rational and conservational choice in this matter. In addition to the obvious scientific evidence, Ireland has morally progressed away from this abhorrently cruel practice, yet we are sadly one of the last few remaining countries where terrorising an animal for fun is legal. Ethically, there is no excuse for allowing this practice to continue. Hare coursing was banned in Northern Ireland in 2011, despite your party's embarrassing objections at the time, so I urge you to finally do the right thing and support a permanent ban on hare coursing in the Republic of Ireland immediately. PLEASE READ THIS. @ my theory on why govt testing is moving at such a slow pace: Imagine if government had started massive widespread and rigorous testing from day one (March 18th 2020), and within a day they had tested 1000 people, or even 5000 people—and the result was that 100, 200, 300...500+ people were infected with coronavirus? Would that not show a massive rate of infection in Mauritius? It would (and I suspect that is already the case since much before March 18th, 2020). And what would that mean? That would literally mean that it would be clear that all of the infections were govt’s fault and due to their negligence. They would not be able blame the population, at all, in this case for the spread of the coronavirus. They would not be able to come on tv and say it is spreading because of our actions and our indiscipline, as they are doing now. No, if we had tested 1000-3000 people in the first 2-3 days and the results had been hundreds of positive tests, then it would be clear that is was all govts fault 100%. Which it is anyways. But this would make it much much clearer. And to what extent. However, by only testing 50 people per day for the first week and then slowly testing more per day until now 2 weeks later we are testing 120 a day (which is still nothing), the government was able to start laying blame on population for the spread of the virus. WHICH IS COMPLETELY FALSE. They did a confusing lockdown that was set up to fail: supermarkets open, tabagie open, all public transport fully functioning. Then they came back and did a instantaneous full lockdown not giving people the time to buy food: so it is normal for people to have to disobey the lockdown: people have to eat. This strategy then enables them to stagger the testing over a few weeks and start to lay blame on unruly citizens rather than them and their complete and utter failure to protect the us, the people of Mauritius. This may be one reason why we are not being given victims names, and their locations/movements—because then it would be possible to easily track them and prove this theory. Worse still: by engaging in this tactic and this behavior/cover-up, the Govt is putting us all at even greater risk. Because WHO and other countries winning against coronavirus advocate for massive widespread testing immediately, which is exactly what our government is NOT doing. They did NOT want massive testing early bc this would prove how negligent they have been in their duty to protect us. Have you noticed that it is ONLY after the second week that the govt has reached out to private clinics and hospitals to help with testing? Why not immediately from day one, as we all know massive widespread testing is the NUMBER ONE TOOL for fighting coronavirus? The govt has been in no rush to do this. None at all. They never contacted any foreign govt to come help us test quickly and massively, even though other countries, like Iraq, did just this. Iraq solicited China immediately to help with their testing and was able to increase their testing within a week from 100/day to 1200/day. Why has our Govt not done that, even to this very day, two weeks later? Why? Simple: bc they did not want that, as it would shine a bright light on their negligence. And prove unequivocally that this is all their fault. Please remember that in South Korea they have never had a lockdown, and they dont blame their citizens for spreading the virus. They have contained the outbreak through massive testing, identifying, and isolating people alone. Just about six weeks ago I wrote you here to alert you about the COVID-19 epidemic that had hit Wuhan, China. It’s now reached about 117 countries including around 18 nations across Africa. As of a few days ago, it’s been upgraded by the World Health Organization (WHO) from a global health emergency to a “pandemic” impacting most of the world. China’s situation has improved greatly now, and they have even sent some teams overseas to help Italy, the second worst hit country. As entrepreneurs, leaders in your communities, parents, students, innovators, I want you each to do your part wherever you are. Here’s a link to the latest WHO guidelines. Don’t spit. This is all common sense for any illness. Tell others. #4. The virus can live on some surfaces for several days. On stairs, don't touch the railings, for instance. Clean your phone. Your pen. You get the idea. #5. Avoid crowds. By now you have all seen, for instance, how many hugely popular sporting events have been put on hold from EPL to Formula One to the entire NBA season. This is to avoid virus transmission in crowds. (The droplets that happen when you sneeze and cough can fly a long way!) Now what are you going to do with all that time you spent watching sport? #EntrepreneurIt! #6. If you think you might have COVID-19, don't just rush to a crowded health clinic, call them first. Isolate yourself, including from your family, but be sure to inform them you are not well. Meanwhile, if you're sick, don't cough or breathe onto anyone. Be smart. Remember: there is no cure yet for this new virus, but most people recover with proper treatment, so you must take it very seriously. #7. Experts say you can be infected by COVID-19 but still not have any symptoms for up to about 14 days. During this time, you can infect others and not know it. The magic happens. Several listings pop up. And, if all things were equal... people would just click the first one and buy it straightaway. Right? But all things **are not** equal. Shoppers know what to look for before they commit to that little add-to-cart button. Well, as a seller? It’s not so different. Some basic research. Data points. A dash of common sense. And a helpful trick-of-the-trade or two... That’s pretty much it. (Does this sound like it takes a degree in astrophysics?) So the obvious question becomes, “then why isn’t the whole world selling at a profit on Amazon?” And the simple, if unsatisfying answer... ...is that while **most** folk can spot a sweet deal in seconds... ...very few will EVER take the time to learn how to spot them **from the seller’s standpoint.** You know that feeling? Scientists ‘strongly condemn’ rumors and conspiracy theories about origin of coronavirus outbreak A group of 27 prominent public health scientists from outside China is pushing back against a steady stream of stories and even a scientific paper suggesting a laboratory in Wuhan, China, may be the origin of the outbreak of COVID-19. “The rapid, open, and transparent sharing of data on this outbreak is now being threatened by rumours and misinformation around its origins,” the scientists, from nine countries, write in a statement published online by The Lancet yesterday. The letter does not criticize any specific assertions about the origin of the outbreak, but many posts on social media have singled out the Wuhan Institute of Virology for intense scrutiny because it has a laboratory at the highest security level—biosafety level 4—and its researchers study coronaviruses from bats, including the one that is closest to SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.
